Worksop made it three wins from three games in a five goal thriller at Sandy Lane. After a fairly stale first half hour, Worksop produced the first real chance when Jed Phillips could only head Woolley’s corner kick onto the bar. The stalemate was broken four minutes from halftime when Simpson turned two defenders and played a ball for Jake Currie to take in his stride and slot past the Athersley goalkeeper.
Athersley were back on level terms when White put Wordsworth through to fire past Kennedy. Worksop then took the lead for the second time when Jordan chased down a ball, which seemed destined to be going out, and squared it to Liam Greenfield who finished superbly from a tight angle. Two minutes after the South Yorkshire outfit were again level when Lee Garsides freekick took a deflection and the ball trickled into the goal. Worksop got their crucial winner in the 87th minute when Matty Thompson was on hand to tuck in Kyle Jordan’s scuffed shot to claim all three points.
