Game 29 // 29/09/18 - Athersley Rec 1-6 Worksop Town

Athersley Rec 1-6 Worksop Town

Tigers end run of losses with big win against Athersley

The Tigers got back to winning ways with a magnificent performance against a struggling Recreation side. Sykes, Mitchell and Price fired Town into the lead before Wright pegged one back with minutes remaining until the break. Worksop’s class prevailed in the second period as they limited the home side’s options as Mitchell and Sykes added their second, with Brunt finishing off the scoring with a neat strike of his own.

After a scrappy first ten minutes, Worksop had the first major opportunity of the contest. Steve Woolley weaved his way towards the edge of the area before pulling his shot wide of the near post.

Worksop took the lead after a quarter into the game. Matt Sykes drilled a low shot across goal which clipped the post as it nestled into the bottom corner.

Twenty minutes in, Kyle Jordan split open the Athersley defence with a ball over the top to Craig Mitchell who lacked the composure needed as he volleyed straight into the keeper’s midriff.

Moments later, the Tigers doubled their lead. Craig Mitchell was slipped through by Kyle Jordan and the forward made up for his earlier opportunity as he tucked his shot past Dan Morton.

Just before the half hour mark, the skipper added to the Town’s tally. A perfect Steve Woolley free-kick was met by Jamie Price who powered his header past Morton.

Athersley pulled a goal back with five minutes to go of the opening forty-five. A corner was headed back into the middle by Copping for Lee Garside who was on hand to nod into the roof of the net.

On the stroke of half-time, Laurie Wilson saw his fierce strike fly just over the bar. Then Steve Woolley’s set-piece was flicked wide by Mitchell at the near post.

Worksop opened the second half chances as Steve Woolley aimed for goal from a free-kick however, the keeper saw it all the way and held onto the ball at his left-hand post.

There were little clear-cut chances up towards the hour mark. Steve Woolley acted the catalyst in two different moves which involved one-two’s with Royles and Mitchell but both outcomes ended in Darce blocking each cross out for a corner which both, in the end, came to nothing.

Steve Woolley then saw a thirty-yard strike whistle past the keepers left and into the advertising boards.

Declan Dawson then forced David Reay into a good save as the Worksop number one parried his downward header, from the corner, wide of Reay’s near post.

Craig Mitchell bagged his brace when the number nine latched onto a Reay pump forward and accelerated towards goal before slamming his shot past the keeper.

Minutes later, Sykes matched Mitchell in getting his second of the game. Royles picked out the unmarked Kyle Jordan who controlled the ball perfectly. ‘KJ’ unselfishly dummied the shot and slipped Sykes through to stroke it past Morton.

With ten minutes remaining, Mitchell was denied his hat-trick. Matt Sykes dinked the ball through to Mitchell who chested it forward but as he tried to lob it over the keeper, the number one patted it away from goal.

Connor Brunt had instant impact from the bench as he added his name to the scoresheet. Liam Royles slotted Poole down the right who subsequently whipped the ball through for Brunt to slot home.

The Tigers had late chances through Sykes and Poole who both fired wide of both top corners.

The final whistle sounded to confirm that the Tigers were back to winning ways.

Worksop next face a tough away trip against Knaresborough Town on Saturday, 6th October.

Game 28 // 28/09/18 - Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Leeds United

Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Leeds United

Two sweet strikes mean honours even in the Yorkshire Derby

Leeds United currently sit top of the Championship table after a magnificent start to Marco Bielsa’s tenure in charge. However, they lost their first league match of the season in their last outing against Birmingham City who overturned the Whites, 1-2, at Elland Road.

Sheffield Wednesday were looking to gain another three points after their successful trip down to Birmingham as the Owls beat Aston Villa, 1-2, thanks to a Marco Matias and Steven Fletcher goal either side of John McGinn’s wonder-strike.

Who would come out of this Yorkshire victorious?

There was a penalty shout in the opening minutes. Fernando Forestieri ran through on goal and was seen to be sent to the ground by Pontus Jansson but despite the claims, the referee gave nothing.

Moments later, Harrison’s cross found the head of Barry Douglas whose powerful downward header was palmed wide by Cameron Dawson.

A quarter into the game, Liam Cooper failed to capitalise on a back post header as he nodded a cross, from the right, wide of the upright despite Dawson being in no mans lands.

Just after the twentieth minute mark, Wednesday had their first major opportunity. Matt Penny fizzed a cross towards the edge of the area where Steven Fletcher struck a fierce volley wide of the keepers right-hand post.

Minutes later, Leeds were inches away from taking the lead. Firstly, Ash Baker almost converted Jack Harrison’s dangerous cross but luckily it drifted wide for a corner. The flag kick caused more mayhem as Barry Douglas saw his initial effort bounce off the post back to the Scotsman so the full-back headed it across to Phillips whose shot was deflected just wide of the same post by Fletcher.

In the aftermath, Michael Hector drilled a long-ranged effort off target.

On the half hour mark, Jack Harrison jinked his way onto his left foot before dragging his shot wide of the near post.

With twenty minutes to go, the home side recorded their first shot on goal. Forestieri weaved his way through the Leeds centre before laying the ball off to Ash Baker who forced a smart save from Bailey Peacock-Farrell who parried the ball behind for a corner.

It was Peacock-Farrell’s opposite number who then received his share of the plaudits. Samuel Saiz hammered a stinging volley towards goal which was tipped over superbly by Dawson.

With the half-time whistle looming, Barry Bannan saw his curling effort bend just too much as his shot whistled past the top right corner.

Wednesday took the lead in spectacular fashion. Adam Reach struck an incredible volley, from the right flank, which cannoned off the post before nestling into the opposite inside netting. Sensational strike!

The half-time whistle sounded shortly after Wednesday’s opener.

Leeds were back on level terms ten minutes after the restart. Klich curled a stunning effort, from twenty-five yards out, beyond the grasp of Cameron Dawson and into the bottom corner.

Peacock-Farrell then pushed academy product Matt Penny’s finely hit shot wide of the mark. Jordan Thorniley headed the following set-piece over the crossbar.

Leeds continued to press and went close once again. Tyler Roberts hit a curling effort, on the swivel, wide of Dawson’s right-hand top corner.

With fifteen minutes to go, Liam Cooper saw his forceful header held at the midriff of Dawson. Leeds regained possession from the keepers clearance and the ball fell to the feet of Harrison who cut in but saw his low driven attempt saved well by Dawson.

Leeds were on top and almost took advantage of a Wednesday error. Bannan gave the ball away to Phillips who quickly threaded it through to Saiz. The tricky midfielder chested it forward and as he pulled the trigger, Tom Lees dove in to block it behind.

Micheal Hector then was alert to hook it away from Roberts at the back post who would have had a certain goal. This was followed by Jordan Thorniley who headed it off the line as Ayling redirected a corner towards goal.

Lucas Joao, with two minutes remaining, disappointingly dragged his shot wide from the corner of the box.

In stoppage time, Adam Reach forced a good stop down low by the Leeds keeper.

The full-time whistle went with the score at one a piece thanks to two sublime finishes from Reach and Klich.

Sheffield Wednesday next face West Brom on Wednesday, 3rd October. Where as on Tuesday, 2nd October, Leeds United travel to Hull City in another Yorkshire Derby.

Game 27 // 27/09/18 - Worksop Town U19s 4-1 Retford United U19s

Worksop Town U19s 4-1 Retford United U19s

Tigers Triumph in Bassetlaw Derby

Town took the lead after twenty minutes thanks to Charlesworth however they were pegged back minutes later by a Bennet volley from a set-piece. Liam Smart and Sam Jones netted two in the space of a minute to put the Tigers ahead at the break. A smart finished from Evison wrapped up the Derby win.
It was an even opening ten minutes on a cool breezy night in S80. Alfie Doddsworth’s quick feet allowed the forward to take aim and fire towards goal which was quickly halted as Widdowson threw himself in front of the shot as he blocked the stinging effort.

Moments later, Doddsworth switched play to Liam Smart who headed across goal to Mushet who hesitated before the keeper claimed it.

A quarter into the game, Tigers had their best chance. Deegan Atherton nodded just inches over the bar from an Evison cross at the back stick.

The Tigers took the lead on the twentieth minute mark. Jack Charlesworth received the ball with his back to goal and hit it on the swivel. The ball went in off the post via a deflection off the leg of Bennet.

Minutes later, United were back on level terms. A free-kick, wide left, was  sent into the box deep towards the back area of the six yard box where Liam Bennet powered his volley past Gamble.

Ten minutes later, Ex-Badgers goalkeeper James Gamble tipped a fierce George White volley wide to keep it level. The Tigers countered and the ball eventually found its way to Mushet who knocked it past Bennet before rifling his shot wide of the upright.

Town added two goals in the space of a minute. Firstly, Liam Smart was threaded through on goal by Darien and the left-back finished off the move perfectly by slotting the ball under Reah.

Almost straight from kick-off, the home side finished off an incredible one touch passing move with Charlesworth squaring it across to Sam Jones who tucked it home.

The Tigers started the second half emphatically. Charlesworth spotted the run of Darien who took the ball down magnificently before dragging his shot wide of the near post.

Ten minutes after the restart Matthew Cassidy saw his thunderous volley, from twenty-five yards, fly just over Gamble’s goal.

On the hour mark, Jay Evison added a fourth goal for the Tigers. Evison was in acres of space on the edge of the box so he took aim and saw his effort bounce beyond the grasp of the keeper who really should have parried the shot.

With a quarter to go, the Badgers squandered a glorious chance to pull a goal back. James Gamble had a lapse in concentration as he passed the ball to the feet of Oliver Ashwell who managed to pull his shot wide of the front post.

Aaron Mushet had the chance to add a fifth with ten minutes remaining. Mushet turned and outpaced his marker but he could only hammer his attempt into the side-netting.

On the stroke of full-time. Aaron Mushet poked wide of the target from McClaren’s drive down the left.

The full-time whistle went to confirm Worksop’s triumph in the Bassetlaw Derby.

The Tigers next face Hallam F.C. on Thursday, 4th October at Sandygate which is the oldest football ground.

Game 26 // 26/09/18 - Worksop Town 2-3 Bridlington Town

Worksop Town 2-3 Bridlington Town

Seasiders beat the Tigers in fiery affair

Bridlington shot into a two goal lead in the opening six minutes of the game thanks to Dennison and McFadyen. The Tigers were on level pegging just before half-time through Mitchell and Woolley. Nathan Modest nicked it right at the death as he nodded over Dave Reay. Patterson, Brunt and gaffer Denton were all sent for early baths after their reactions to questionable refereeing decisions.

Brett Agnew’s side put a halt to back to back league defeats with a draw against Harrogate Railway Athletic on Saturday. They also have two ex-Tigers in their roster, Shaquille McKenzie and Nathan Modest, who both featured for the Tigers in our final Evo-Stik season as they played understudy to Leon Mettam and Tom Denton.

The Tigers were looking to get back on track after a 2-3 defeat to fierce rivals Handsworth Parramore.

The away side got off to a fast start as they swiftly took the lead inside three minutes. Right-back Lewis Dennison weaved his way into the box from the flanks before tucking his shot under David Reay.

Their lead was doubled minutes later. Andrew Norfolk picked out the run of McFadyen. The centre forward knocked the ball in front of him before squeezing his shot past an out-rushing Reay and the challenge of the covering Royles.

The Tigers’ first chance came eleven minutes into the contest. Woolley’s in-swinging corner was glanced towards the back post by Craig Mitchell however, Lewis was in the right place to clear off the post.

Mitchell made it two goals in two games as he pulled one back after a quarter into the game. Steve Woolley jinked his run down the right side of the box before cutting in and seeing his left footed effort deflect off the thigh of Craig Mitchell and into the back of the net.

McFadyen then saw his low effort drift across goal and, to the relief of the keeper, wide of the far post. Worksop countered and Goodwin won a free-kick around twenty-five yards from goal. Steve Woolley stepped up and saw his well hit attempt caught by the keeper.

On the half hour mark, Charlie Taylor saw his acrobatic effort blocked off the line by Dennison.

With ten minutes of the first half remaining, Worksop were reduced to ten men. Connor Brunt went in hard on Dennison but won the ball cleanly. This started a mass brawl between both sides and the referee dismissed Danny Patterson for his actions in the aftermath.

On the stroke of half-time, it should have been level. Connor Brunt chased down and blocked the clearance of Dennison. The ball fell to the feet of Mitchell who opted to try and take it past Jenkinson, as the keeper was stranded on the edge of the box, but the latter made the challenge and thumped it wide.

Late in the injury time, Steve Woolley worked his magic and tied up the game. In a similar position to his earlier set-piece, Woolley hit his free-kick over the wall and the ball kissed the post as it nestled into the back of the net.

The half-time whistle went moments later after a rollercoaster first period, the ride was set to continue as we entered the second.

Moments into the second half, Nathan Modest drew a smart save from David Reay who parried it into the path of Norfolk whose shrewd goal was stopped by the last ditch tackle of Matt Reay.

Ten minutes after the restart, Craig Mitchell volleyed wide of the bottom right from a Woolley corner.

On the hour mark, Craig Mitchell was sent free through the middle by Woolley. Mitchell took two touches before almost being caught and he fired into the midriff of Jackson.

Bridlington thought they had retaken the lead. The ball came out to Jack Griffen whose rifled shot was spilt into the path of Nathan Modest who somehow volleyed into the ground and over the bar.

Three quarters into the game, Joe McFadyen dispatched a beautiful curling attempt from twenty-five yards which looked in until it cannoned off the upright and away to safety.

Bridlington took the lead with five minutes to go. Norfolk saw his shot ricochet off the crossbar into the path of Nathan Modest who was on hand to nod over a wondering Reay.

As we entered the final stages, Connor Brunt was sent off from the bench after apparent dissent towards the linesman who called the referee over to do the deed. Craig Denton was then given his marching orders as the referee failed to give a clear corner and Denton was frustrated.

The Tigers next take on Athersley Recreation on Saturday, 29th August where as the Seasiders face Hall Road Rangers at the Neil Hudgell Solicitors Stadium.

Attendance: 323

Game 25 // 15/09/18 - Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 Stoke City

Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 Stoke City

Owls fight from behind to draw against Potters

City got off to a quick start in the game as Afobe slammed his shot past a shook Dawson. Afobe doubled his tally twenty minutes in but Matias halved the deficit moments later. Wednesday equalised late thanks to a magnificent Barry Bannan free-kick.

Stoke City haven’t had the best starts to life in the Championship despite the plethora of Premier League quality which oozes through their squad. They have only picked up five points from their opening six league games. They lost 2-1 against West Brom in their previous outing.

Wednesday went into the international break on the back of three successive 2-1 wins over Millwall, Ipswich and Reading. Barry Bannan recently had his wonder-strike against Millwall named Championship Goal of the Month.

Stoke opened the scoring in the first few minutes. Mame Biram Diouf played the ball into ex-Owl loanee Benik Afobe’s path where the forward rifled his shot into the back of the net past Cameron Dawson.

City then went close to doubling their lead minutes later. Martina played the ball across to Tom Ince who shifted the ball onto his left foot before firing across the face of goal and just wide of the far post.

Diouf could have got himself on the scoresheet in the tenth minute. He tamely headed Ince’s corner into the ground and straight into the hands of Dawson.

Joey Pelupessy saw his volley, five minutes later, go high over the bar from a Bannan cross which was headed into his path by Martins Indi.

Lucas Joao’s shot, from the edge of the box, went just inches the bar and was followed by a moving minutes applause for Oliver Rains who sadly passed away this week. Rest in Peace Oliver.

Benik Afobe bagged his brace just after the twentieth minute mark. Afobe escaped the offside trap to poke the ball over an out-rushing Dawson to double their lead.

Wednesday instantly replied with a goal of their own and reduce the deficit. Bannan picked out the run of Fletcher who chested it down for Marco Matias to poke past England International Jack Butland.

Both sides kept the ball well without having many chances in between and soon after, the referee blew for half-time.

Wednesday started much brighter in the second half. Bannan’s cross was volleyed high into the air by Fletcher which perfectly set Pelupessy for an attempt at goal which he smashed over the crossbar.

Ten minutes after the restart. Tom Ince danced his way into the box but was met by the important challenge of Thorniley who sent it out for a corner. Steven Fletcher then blocked Peter Etebo’s acrobatic effort from nestling into the bottom corner.

On the hour mark, Joey Pelupessy made an excellent tackle on Allen to send the ball into the path of Reach who hammered his shot straight into the midriff of Jack Butland who held onto the effort.

Cameron Dawson then made an excellent save to deny Afobe his hat-trick. Liam Palmer headed Ince’s cross into the back of Afobe which caused the ball to deflect towards the bottom corner where Dawson dropped down quickly to push it wide of the target.

Moments later, Wednesday lost the ball on the edge of the box and the visitors countered in numbers. Martina’s cross fell to Diouf at the back stick but he saw his chance blocked by the body of Dawson and Etebo curled the follow up wide of the upright.

Matt Penney had a chance with fifteen minutes to go. Penney started his run from deep. He weaved his way down the left, played a one-two with Bannan, before driving the ball across goal which was parried away by the strong left hand of Butland.

Barry Bannan equalised with ten minutes remaining. Bannan floated his free-kick, just left of the centre, over the wall and in off the post. This was the Scotsman’s second goal of the campaign.

In stoppage time, former Barcelona youth product Bojan hit a free-kick over the bar from twenty-five yards out.

The referee blew for full-time with the scoreline at 2-2.

Game 24 // 13/09/18 - Sheffield FC U19s 3-0 Worksop Town U19s

Sheffield F.C. Under 19s 3-0 Worksop Town Under 19s

Tigers defeated comfortably in League opener

The home side took an early lead as Alfie Eagle powered his shot in off the bar. Their lead was increased in the second period as Wilson deflected a clearance into the net. Sam Morley then tapped home the third with fifteen minutes remaining and FC ran out victors.
Sheffield took the lead in the opening two minutes of the game. Alfie Eagle burst down the left flank before entering the box and rifling an effort in off the underside of the crossbar.

Moments later, the home side had two chances to add to their tally. Iren Wilson was threaded through on goal by Ehsan Mohammed but James Gamble rushed off his line and deflected the ball away to safety. Mitchison picked up the loose ball and switched it to the left where Mohammed took it in his stride before firing across the face of goal and wide.

Town had their first chance ten minutes into the contest. Jack Shaw floated a free-kick into the area which was headed out to Harley Brown who flashed his half-volley over the bar.

James Gamble then produced a fine save to keep out Alfie Eagle’s well hit free-kick which was twenty-five yards away from goal.

A quarter into the game, Bobby Thompson slipped Aaron Mushet through on goal but as the striker pulled the trigger, Sam White produced an important slide challenge to put the ball behind for a corner which Alfie Smith glanced wide of the upright.

Worksop’s first major opportunity came in the twentieth minute. Bobby Thompson dinked the ball down the line to Aaron Mushet who out-paced his man and pulled the ball back for Darrian whose low driven shot was well held by Ben Woodcock.

Minutes after, Hutchinson missed a glorious chance to double the lead. Mohammed swung an excellent ball towards the back stick where Lewis Hutchinson sliced his attempt wide of the upright despite having a third of the goal to aim at.

With five minutes of the half to go, Gamble produced another string of fine saves to deny the host’s. Firstly, Mitchison volleyed a bouncing ball in the box towards goal which was superbly tipped wide of the far post. Following the corner, the ball fell to the feet of Mohammed in the box who hit an effort on the swivel but Gamble had already accelerated out and held onto the shot.

FC almost started the second half like the first as they went close two minutes in. Iren Wilson weaved his way towards the edge of the area before pulling his effort wide of the front post.

Moments later, Sam Morley was in acres of space on the right but opted to take his shot early as he saw his fierce strike parried away from goal by the Tigers number one.

‘The Worlds First’ doubled their lead in unusual fashion. Iren Wilson chased down a back pass to Gamble whose clearance deflected off Wilson and nestled into the side-netting.

On the hour mark, Ben Mitchison glanced over a pin point cross by Alfie Eagle.

Regan Watkinson saw his long range drive caught well by Gamble who stood strong to pull the ball towards his midriff.

The host’s added a third goal with less than a quarter to go. The dangerous run of Alfie Eagle ended with the full-back fizzing a cross towards the centre where an unmarked Sam Morley was on hand to volley past the keeper.

Sheffield FC had a few half chances right at the death with Watkinson and Wilson but kept the ball well and saw out the game to confirm that the Tigers would open their campaign with a defeat.

We next travel to Dronfield Town on Thursday, 20th September where we look to get our season on track.

Game 23 // 11/09/18 - Hemsworth MW 0-2 Worksop Town

Hemsworth Miners Welfare 0-2 Worksop Town

The Tigers beat The Wells to advance in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup

A penalty from Danny Patterson and a Tomas Poole volley put the Tigers ahead in the first half. Town held their own in the second period and limited the home side to seal their place in the next round.

Welfare came into this cup tie on the back of their first league defeat this season, losing 0-1 to Barton Town (who are now joint top of the NCEL with Hemsworth after their 3-1 victory over Handsworth Parramore)

The Tigers also lost their first game in all competitions after losing heavily against Northern Premier League outfit, Nantwich Town.

Which side could get back to winning ways at The Yorkshire NuBuilds Stadium?

Hemsworth opened the chances in this contest in the opening few minutes.

Max Pemberton nearly accidentally opened the scoring for the host’s as he redirected Sam Leach’s in-swinging cross towards goal but Dave Reay was on hand to spare his blushes and caught the ball on the line.

Moments later, Jack Wakefield saw his corner powered just wide at the front post by Luke Danville.

On nine minutes, Matt Reay was bundled over in the box and referee Melissa Burgin, who had an excellent game, pointed to the spot. Danny Patterson stepped up and slammed home the opener from twelve yards.

Hemsworth then had the chance to equalise on nineteen minutes. A Collier crossed fizzed up into the air for Adam Wilson who volleyed just wide of Reay’s right hand post.

The Tigers then squandered a glorious chance to double their lead. Steve Woolley threaded Trench down the left flank where the wing-back took the ball in his stride. Trench accelerated towards goal before seeing his shot parried into the path of Tomas Poole who managed to slice his shot wide of the open goal.

Bradley Dockerty, who was wearing the number ten jersey, looked to be The Wells’ main attacking threat. He was involved in two opportunities in as many minutes to try and level the game.

Firstly, Dockerty slipped past the challenge of Price before seeing his rifled shot, from the edge of the area, fly straight into the midriff of Dave Reay who held onto the attempt.

Then Dockerty squared the ball across the box to Richard Collier who fluffed his lines and scuffed his shot wide from ten yards out.

The Tigers extended their tally with five minutes of the half remaining. Tomas Poole made up for his earlier miss as he struck a fine volley past Rusling after the ball was headed into his path by Michael Jones.

The half-time whistle went with the Tigers leading by two goals to nil.

Welfare had the first chance of the second period when Dockerty escaped the attention of Brad Wilson to latch onto a Wakefield through-ball but the striker saw his thunderous effort ricochet off the post and out for a goal-kick.

Tomas Poole almost bagged his brace eleven minutes after the break in unusual fashion. Poole closed down a back pass to Rusling who had a ‘heart in the mouth’ moment as he saw his clearance deflect off the gluteus maximus of Tomas Poole but to his relief, the ball went just inches over the bar.

Dave Reay then denied the home side two glimpses at goal. Richard Collier cut in from the left flank and struck a sweet shot from twenty-five yards which Dave Reay stood strong and caught the swerving effort. Minutes later, the prominent figure was on hand to palm away Dockerty’s stinging shot, from similar range, out for a corner which in the end came to nothing.

Worksop Town stayed compact for the rest of the game to not only confirm their place in the next round, but to show a positive reaction to their loss to Nantwich Town. A professional and solid performance!

The Tigers next face Winsford United in the next round of the FA Vase on Saturday, 15th September.

Where as Hemsworth face Goole AFC in the league as they were automatically placed in the next round of the Vase as their opponents, Wythenshaw Town and Rylands, were removed from the competition.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Tomas Poole
It was an excellent team performance with one or two standing out. I gave the MOTM to Tomas Poole for his hard work, quickness and willingness to turn defence into attack and was brilliant on the ball. He took his goal wonderfully and has proven to be an excellent addition in the summer.

After the game I interviewed Poole about the performance and his goal;

We weren’t at the races on Saturday. I know they are a better team than us and two leagues above but I thought it was right to come here today and play well and work hard and as long as you work hard, the results will come and I thought we did that tonight.

Everyone wants to play but we’re in it together whether we come off the bench or start. Obviously I want to start every game but yeah I’m happy with the goal but I’m glad we’ve got the win at the end of the day

To be honest, I had to make up for the one I missed ten minutes before it but I took a touch, just made sure I hit it well and it went into the bottom corner”.

Sheffield Wednesday Under 23s 2-1 Colchester United Under 23s

Owls back on track as they edge winless U’s

The Owls took the lead very early on thanks to an own goal by Kensdale. Morgan Fox doubled their lead in the second half with a cool finish from the edge of the area. Colchester pulled a goal back from the spot but the Owls held on to claim all three points.
Sheffield Wednesday Under 23s looked to get back to winning ways after drawing in their previous two fixtures against Cardiff City and Coventry City, which ended 1-1 and 2-2 respectively.

Colchester United Under 23s have lost all their fixtures this season with the latest defeat coming against The Owls’ steel city rivals, in which the Blades ran out 0-3 victors.

Wednesday took the lead three minutes in. Gary Hooper slipped Jack Stobbs, who escaped the offside trap, down the right flank. Stobbs drilled the ball across goal towards Fraser Preston however, Oliver Kensdale ended up poking the ball past Vose and into his own net.

Wednesday almost doubled their lead a minute later. Kieran Lee nicked the ball off Aaron Barnes and switched the ball out to Jack Stobbs who quickly slotted Hooper through. Unfortunately, Hooper’s first touch was poor and the keeper gathered up the loose ball.

In the sixteenth minute, Jack Stobbs cut in from the right and riled an attempt straight into the midriff of Vose who caught comfortably.

Gary Hooper almost got on the scoresheet after twenty minutes. Jack Stobbs threaded the prolific forward through but Hooper slotted inches wide of the post.

Hooper then turned provider but still Wednesday couldn’t add to their tally. Stobbs crossed into the middle where Kensdale cleared into the back of Marshall. The ball fell to the feet of Hooper who dummied the shot before squaring it to Preston whose effort was superbly saved by the keeper. Following the corner, Connor O’Grady powered his header wide of the front post.

Colchester’s first chance came five minutes before the break. Ryan Gondoh hit his free-kick, from twenty-five yards out, way over the bar and into the stand.

The half-time whistle went with Wednesday leading by a goal to nil.

The second half started very slowly. Wednesday were on top and keeping possession well where as United kept tight and compact.

The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors in the seventy-first minute. Gondoh turned O’Grady and accelerated towards goal but the striker dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Wednesday made it 2-0 with less than fifteen minutes to go. Good work from Jordan Lonchar allowed him to escape his marker and tee up Morgan Fox on the edge of the box who beautifully dispatched a curling effort into the top corner.

Colchester pulled a goal back thanks to Noah Chilvers from the penalty spot with eight minutes remaining.

Kirby could of put the game to bed on the stroke of full-time. The ball fell to Kirby, twelve yards out, but the midfielder fluffed his lines and sliced his shot over the bar.

Minutes later, Jordan Lonchar turned Callum Anderson inside out before firing across the face of goal and wide.

Wednesday saw the game out to claim the victory at Hillsborough.

Game 21 // 01/09/18 - Worksop Town 2-1 Grimsby Borough

Worksop Town 2-1 Grimsby Borough

Tigers edge Borough in Vase encounter.

The Tigers got off to a flying start when Matt Sykes volleyed Worksop into the lead. They were also quick off the mark in the second half as Steve Woolley poked his shot over the keeper to double the advantage. Adam Drury pulled a goal back for the visitors but the Tigers held their own to claim a place in the next round.
Today’s visitors, Grimsby Borough are unbeaten so far into this campaign, where they currently occupy fifth position. Last season Borough narrowly missed out on promotion as they finished third in the table before they lost in the play-off final, 2-3, to Eccleshill United.

The star man for Grimsby Borough is Marc Cooper. With five goals to his name this season, Tigers Fans will know the prolific striker from his time with Cleethorpes Town as he fired the Owls to the Evo-Stik as he finished top scorer in 2017.

The away side advanced into the next round of the FA Cup as they beat Long Eaton United in their previous game thanks to a goal from the prominent figure of Dan Trott at the Bradley.

The Tigers, who are also unbeaten, come into this game high in confidence as they beat Evo-Stik outfit Carlton Town 2-1 at Sandy Lane on Sunday.

The Tigers took the lead in the third minute. Kyle Jordan slipped Mark Simpson through on goal but his low driven shot was saved by the feet of Scott Drury. The ball came out to the edge of the area where Matt Sykes slammed home the opener.

Borough then had two chances to equalise. Firstly, David Reay got down quickly to keep out Adam Drury’s cross which was diverted towards goal accidentally by the knee of Pemberton.

Moments later, Josh Morrell cut in from the left but flashed his shot across goal and wide.

There was a long stoppage in play when Jacob Norburn went down in a heap clutching his face after a collision with Goodwin.

Twenty-five minutes in, a Max Pemberton long throw was glanced just wide by Ross Goodwin via a vital deflection from Sunter. The corner was headed out to Matt Sykes who saw his thunderous volley blocked by Venney.

On the half hour mark, a mix up between the two Reays allowed Dan Trott to have an attempt on goal which he squandered wide of the far post.

Mark Simpson then saw his header, from a pin-point Liam Royles cross, nestle into the wrong side of the netting.

Sykes was enjoying a lot of freedom on the left hand side. He was slotted through by Royles but he saw his shot drift across the face of goal and wide.

Mark Simpson should have added to the Tigers’ lead when Steve Woolley threaded him through on goal but the number nine opted to try and squeeze it to Jordan instead of shooting and Josh Sunter cleared the ball behind.

On the stroke of half-time, the Tigers could of extended their lead. Mark Simpson was slotted down the right flank by Woolley. Simpson drove the ball towards the back stick, where Kyle Jordan would have had a certain tap in, but Scott Drury stuck out a foot which sent the ball into the air where Goodwin tried to nod into the net however, he misjudged his jump and was under it which made the effort tame and allowed Drury to get up and pat away from goal.

Worksop Town doubled their lead five minutes after the restart. Matt Sykes’ cross towards the back stick was magically brought down by Steve Woolley who’s fantastic first touch set him up to poke it past the keeper into the roof of the net.

Borough pulled a goal back just before the hour stage of the game. Josh Venney sent Adam Drury down the left. The winger took a touch before firing past an out-rushing David Reay.

Grimsby were pushing for an equaliser. Dan Trott latched onto a Marc Cooper flick on but Brad Wilson produced a fantastic slide tackle as Trott was about to pull the trigger. The visitors then had three shots bravely blocked by the Tigers from the corner before it was cleared.

Minutes later, Matt Sykes saw his curling free-kick tipped wide of the upright by the keeper. Matt Reay headed over from the following corner taken by Steve Woolley.

Grimsby were piling on the pressure going into the last fifteen minutes of the game. Marc Cooper swivelled past his man but he saw his fierce strike blocked by Max Pemberton.

Scott Drury made an excellent save with three minutes to go. Craig Mitchell dispatched a fine volley on the turn but the Borough number one reacted sharply to parry away to safety.

The visitors went close in injury time. Everyone was up for the Grimsby corner, including the keeper. Lovett’s set-piece came out to Jack Debnam who fizzed his shot just inches over the bar.

The Tigers held the ball for the remaining minutes to go through to the next round of the FA Vase.

The Tigers next travel to Northern Premier League Nantwich Town as they look to defy the odds and progress into the next rounding the FA Cup.
