Tonight we welcomed North-East based Sunderland to Hillsborough. This is the team in Red and White’s third championship game after being relegated from the Premier League last season. The Mackem’s went ahead four minutes in as Honeyman smashed the ball into a keeperless net as Westwood has rushed out to attempt to block the initial cross. Wednesday searched for an equaliser when Reach raced down the left flanked to cross it to Winnall who fired it straight into the body of Jason Steele. Sunderland almost doubled there lead when McGeady’s freekick found the head of Lewis Grabban whose header flashed wide.
The Owls turned up the tempo for the second half following a poor first and brought on striker Steven Fletcher, who Wednesday signed last summer on a free from Sunderland. The visitors were keen to add to their lead and nearly did when James Vaughan got hold of the ball, however he could only fire wide. Straight away Wednesday had a chance of their own when Hooper forced a save out of Jason Steele. Two minutes later the Owls were level, David Jones hit a thunderous shot from 30 yards out after the ball was cleared to him from Didier N’Dong. Late on Hooper saw his volley cannon off the face off the crossbar and despite being mostly in control of the Second Half, the game finished 1-1.
