Game 37 // 20/10/18 - Hall Road Rangers 2-4 Worksop Town

Hall Road Rangers 2-4 Worksop Town

Moxam bags his first goals as the Tigers are victorious at Hall Road Rangers

The Tigers raced into a three goal lead before the break before adding a fourth in the second period. The home side netted two goals towards the end however, it was too late for a comeback and Worksop would take all three points back to S80.
Hall Road Rangers are currently hovering above the relegation zone and are looking to get some points on the board in their bid to get out of danger as early as possible. In their previous fixture, they were defeated, 4-2, away at Knaresborough Town on Non-League Day.

The Tigers were looking to go one better than last time out where they drew with a strong Maltby Main side at Sandy Lane.

The host’s had the first major opportunity of the game. Matt Reay could only head a long ball, from Alex Stock, into the path of Connor Harman whose long ranged effort was held down low by Dave Reay.

The Tigers replied to Hall Roads chance with one of their own. Laurie Wilson slipped Matt Sykes down the left flank where the winger saw his low driven shot saved by the feet of Charlie Dixon.

Steve Woolley then saw his free-kick fly over the wall but unfortunately, the ball cannoned off the face of the crossbar and Charlie Taylor headed the rebound wide of the target.

A frantic first ten minutes ended with Kyle Jordan who jinked his way into the box before cutting onto his left foot where he dragged his attempt wide of the mark.

Rangers were denied twice in a minute by David Reay to keep the scoreline goalless. Jack Lorimer sent Josh Vickers through on goal where the striker set himself up before volleying towards goal which was parried wide of the post by Reay. The Worksop number one then produced another fine save from the corner to tip Louis Bruce’s powerful header past the upright.

Just after twenty minutes, Aaron Moxam opened the scoring and his account for the club. A long throw by Royles was firstly flicked on by Wilson, before being guided into the goal by the head of Moxam.

Just after the half hour mark, Liam Royles weaved his way along the edge of the area before playing it into Aaron Moxam who sharply turned his man but saw his effort turned wide by the leg of Bruce.

The Tigers then doubled their lead through top scorer, Kyle Jordan. Danny Patterson lifted the ball over the top for Kyle Jordan who knocked it over the keeper before tapping the ball home for an easy finish.

Rangers were on the back foot but when they did get forward, they tested Reay. Sykes lost focus while on the ball and was robbed of possession by Vickers. The striker cut in from the right and forced a smart save from Reay who managed to push the shot wide.

Danny Patterson then flicked a Steve Woolley corner inches over the bar at the front post with five minutes to go.

On the stroke of half-time, Steve Woolley fired Kyle Jordan’s cut back past Dixon and into the back of the net for the third goal of the afternoon.

The referee blew for the break moments after the Tigers’ dominant performance.

Ten minutes after the restart, Matt Reay forced Charlie Dixon into an acrobatic save as Matt Reay looped his header towards goal from the edge of the area.

Three minutes after his chance, Matt Reay floated a gorgeous ball into the area, from deep, which was matched by Kyle Jordan who flicked it up for Steve Woolley to dispatch fine volley which was well held by the keeper.

Just before the hour mark, Worksop added a fourth goal to their tally. Matt Sykes and Kyle Jordan played a magnificent a one-two before Sykes headed the ball across the box for Aaron Moxam who was on hand to finish off the move for his brace.

Moxam almost completed his hat-trick ten minutes after his double. Aaron Moxam curved his run to beat the offside trap and raced towards goal however, the forward disappointingly rifled his shot over the bar.

Rangers countered through Ben Vazquez who sent Leon Smith through on goal but the number seven hammered his volley wide of Dave Reay’s right-hand post.

The home side pulled a goal back with two minutes remaining. Substitute Ben Vazquez picked out the run of Josh Vickers who executed a sublime volley across goal and into the far bottom corner.

Moments later, the referee pointed to the spot when Charlie Taylor handled the ball just inside the box. Connor Harman stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to halve the deficit.

The Tigers kept the ball well to see out a good win.

Game 36 // 19/10/18 - Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Middlesbrough

Boro go top of the table with win over the Owls

After a goalless first half, the away side netted two in the opening ten minutes to fire them into control of the fixture. Adam Reach scored a trademark stunner to pull a goal back but the Owls couldn’t find the equaliser they desired.
The international break was over and Championship action returned with a ‘Friday Night Special’ as Sheffield Wednesday welcomed Middlesbrough to Hillsborough.

Boro were looking to get back on track as in their previous fixture, they were defeated by Nottingham Forest, who also occupied a play-off spot as well as tonight’s teams.

The Owls went into the break full of confidence as they beat Bristol City, 1-2, at Ashton Gate. Both goals coming from substitute Lucas Joao in the second half.

Wednesday opened the chances after an equal opening ten minutes. Matt Penney’s surging run down the left ended with the youngster drilling a ball towards the back stick however, Daniel Ayala was on hand to clear it away to safety.

Adam Reach thought he’d opened the scoring in the Friday night tie. Barry Bannan floated a superb cross into the middle where the former Middlesbrough winger glanced a header towards goal which kissed the crossbar before resting on top of the net.

Ten minutes later, Daniel Ayala glanced Jonny Howson’s free-kick wide of the far post.

On the half hour mark, Adam Reach jinked his way into the box, beating two players along the way, before he flashed a powerful drive over the bar.

Michael Hector then showed his bravery as he put his body on the line to block a thunderous strike from Adam Clayton from just outside the area.

On the stroke of half-time, Mohammed Besic saw his fizzing strike saved and held down low by Cameron Dawson. The Owls countered and the ball ended up with Lucas Joao who held it up on the edge of the box before pulling it back to Barry Bannan. The Scotsman swiftly shifted the ball to his fellow countryman, Steven Fletcher, who tried an audacious chipped effort from just inside the area which floated over the target.

The half-time whistle went moments later as both sides went in at the break goalless.

The visitors took the lead four minutes after the restart. Mohammed Besic was threaded through by Stuart Downing and the Bosnian finished the move by calmly slotting under Dawson and into the bottom corner.

Jonny Howson then tried his luck when he curled a left footed effort towards goal which was held by Cameron Dawson.

Middlesbrough doubled their lead thanks to an error. An easy back pass was intercepted by Besic who subsequently squared the ball to an unmarked Assombalonga who tapped home for his fifth league goal of the season.

Wednesday finally shook off their slow start and were in search of a pathway back into the contest. Barry Bannan’s short corner was drilled into the area by Reach. The ball was cleared to the edge by Shotton where Hector teed up Matt Penney to volley over the bar.

Boro went straight down the other end and Besic saw his long ranged effort saved by Dawson.

An interchange of passes between Palmer, Bannan, Pelupessy and Reach allowed the latter to dink the ball into the middle where Atdhe Nuhiu saw his downward header blocked by Aden Flint.

With a quarter to go, Liam Palmer stopped Besic from adding another goal to his tally by nodding over his bending effort from the right corner of the box.

The home side pulled a goal back with nine minutes remaining. Adam Reach was in the perfect spot, on the edge of the area, to volley home a headed clearance into the back of the net against his former employers.

With a minute to go, George Saville snatched at his shot from twenty-five yards and dragged it wide of the near post.

In stoppage time, Bannan’s corner was unchallenged until Tom Lees connected with it at the back stick but his marker managed to stop it on the line which caused a pile up in the box and the referee blew for a Boro free-kick despite it looking like obstruction by the away side.

Middlesbrough took their time to get things restarted and the man in the middle brought proceedings to an end.

The Owls travel to St Andrews next Saturday as they take on Birmingham City. Where as the visitors welcome Rotherham United to the Riverside.

Game 35 // 16/10/18 - Hallam FC 3-1 Jubilee Sports

Hallam FC 3-1 Jubilee Sports

Hallam come from behind to beat Jubilee

Jubilee went ahead in the contest from the penalty spot but Hallam managed to equalise in the dying moments before putting the game fully in their control by adding two goals in the opening five minutes of extra time.

Tonight, at Sandygate, two teams clashed for a place in the next round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

Last time out, Hallam progressed through to the second round of the FA Vase as they came from behind to beat Charnock Richard, 3-1, at home.

Where as the visitors, Jubilee FC, suffered a 2-1 defeat on the road at Denaby United.

The opening quarter was end to end with no product from either-side.

Hallam had the first opportunity of the game just after twenty minutes. A cross from wide right was brought down by Littlejohn who subsequently teed up Tom Wilson, on the edge of the area, who saw his curled effort caught easily by Richard Spink.

Moments later, Mitch Husbands received the ball, from Bishop, with his back to goal. The forward sharply turned away from Bingley before dragging his shot wide of the near post. Husbands then saw his header, from a Niall Smith cross, loop wide of the upright.

On the half hour mark, Danny Booth hit a low driven shot towards goal which drifted wide from twenty-five yards.

Jubilee took the lead from the penalty spot. Danny Barnsley latched onto a pump upfield and proceeded to accelerate towards goal until Darwent rushed out and caught the striker’s legs as Barnsley knocked it around the number one. Charlie Hobson stepped up and smashed it past the keeper, who guessed the right way, from twelve yards.

Hallam were looking for the equaliser in the tie and thought they had it on thirty-six minutes. An interchange of passes between Bishop, Wilson and Husbands allowed the latter to take it past his man before slamming it wide of the front post.

Bishop then forced the keeper into a fine save when he cut in from the right and rifled a shot towards goal which Richard Spink parried away in front of him and Danny Bingley cleared it to safety.

With the first period coming to a close, Alfie Smith saw his long ranged effort fly high over the bar.

Minutes after the restart, Callum Pinhorn saw his snapshot, from the right flank, spilt by the keeper however, Darwent managed to grab hold of the ball at the second attempt and deny Barnsley a certain second.

On the hour mark, Sports almost extended their lead. Smith powered a header on target which created a goalmouth scramble in which Marc Peacock managed to head it off the line before hoofing it to danger.

Hallam were almost on level terms. Treasure did well on the right before forcing Scott Bingley to make a challenge as the ball went out for a corner. The flag-kick was met by the head of Watson but blocked on the line by Bingley. The ball fell to Watson’s feet as his shot was blocked off the line once again but this time by Hobson.

With twenty minutes to go, Charlie Myers whipped an excellent ball into the middle which was headed into the air by Statham and into the path of Niall Smith whose well struck volley was superbly tipped over by Spink.

Into the last quarter we went and Jubilee missed a golden opportunity too put the game to bed. Danny Barnsley was threaded down the right before pulling it back for James Binney whose initial effort was brilliantly saved down low by Darwent, before Binney hammered the rebound against the body of the keeper and over the bar.

Hallam were still pushing for a goal to even the contest. Watson dinked the ball over the back line for Reece Treasure who poorly headed straight at the keeper.

With five minutes remaining, Peacock sent a ball towards the middle from halfway where Sam Smith headed a forceful effort towards goal but the keeper managed to hold onto the effort.

In stoppage time, Hallam equalised to break the hearts of Jubilee. Kieran Watson skipped past several challenges before firing past the keeper.

The referee blew for the end of normal time and confirm extra-time would take place.

Four minutes in, Hallam completed their comeback. Reece Treasure cleverly flicked the ball past his man into the path of the lethal Kieran Watson who calmly slotted past the keeper.

Two minutes later, Watson had his hat-trick. Roebuck slotted Treasure down the left where the pacey forward sprinted past his man before chipping into the centre where Watson got the vital touch to send it into the bottom corner.

Reece Treasure had made a big impact since his introduction early into the second half. Treasure tried his luck from twenty-five yards out but the keeper was on hand to push the attempt into the air and then caught it at the second time of asking.

Hallam also registered the first chance of the second part of extra-time. The ball over from Husbands was poked towards goal by Roebuck but was matched by a fine save down below by Spink.

The visitors were down to nine men with five minutes remaining. Danny Bingley flew in very hard and dangerously on Tyler Bradley who had just cleared the ball on the touchline. Both players squared up with the culprit grabbing the neck of Bradley before they were split. Bingley was given his marching orders, as well as Jubilee’s Captain who was also dismissed for his words directed at the referee in the after-mass.

The final whistle sounded to confirm Hallam’s place in the next round. Jubilee fought hard in the game but Hallam’s talent prevailed in the end.

Hallam are at home as they next face East Yorkshire Carnegie on Saturday, 20th October. The away side are on the road once again as they travel to Swindon Athletic.

Game 34 // 13/10/18 - Worksop Town 1-1 Maltby Main

Worksop Town 1-1 Maltby Main

Honours even on a very windy Non-League Day

Maltby Main took the lead against the run of play just after the half hour mark thanks to Cameron Rigby. Kyle Jordan cancelled out the visitors’ lead as he volleyed home the equaliser. It was a tense and scrappy finish as neither team could conjure up a winner.

The Tigers opened the chances in the first two minutes of the game when space opened up for Steve Woolley in the centre and the September Player of the Month winner fired high over the bar.

Moments later, a good interchange of passes between Trench, Woolley and Moxam allowed the latter to square it, on the edge of the box, to Kyle Jordan who cleverly cut past his marker before seeing his shot deflect wide via the leg of Brad Morton.

In the tenth minute, Kyle Jordan took aim from twenty-five yards and curled a tame effort wide of the far post.

After Worksop’s dominance in the opening stages, Maltby had their first opportunity of the game. Ross Duggan received the ball with his back to goal and hit a shot on the swivel which David Reay stopped from going in despite spilling it on the first attempt.

Twenty minutes in, Jordan almost opened the scoring. Royles drifted a ball into the centre where Jordan’s first touch set him up for the volley on the spin in which he executed sweetly but the shot whistled wide of the upright.

Minutes after, Main were denied a certain goal thanks to David Reay. Jonathan Hill picked out the run of Ross Duggan at the back post where the forward saw his volley saved by the arm of Reay and the ball was subsequently cleared.

Just after the half-hour mark, Maltby Main took the lead in a similar way to last weeks fist goal at Knaresborough. Josh Nodder slipped in-between Matt Reay and Trench to drill the ball across goal for Cameron Rigby to pass into an open net.

With five minutes to go, Steve Woolley almost worked his magic when he lined-up a free-kick which was whipped over the wall and just inches wide of the post.

On the stroke of half-time, a Pemberton whipped cross was headed out to Matt Reay who teed up Sykes for a fizzing volley which rose high over the bar and clipped the side of the clubhouse on his way down.

Town should have been on level terms five minutes after the restart. Matt Sykes played in a low ball towards the centre when Aaron Moxam saw his header put behind by the brave block of Morton.

Rigby almost bagged his brace when he cut in from the left but Reay made a smart save down below to deny the winger.

The Tigers levelled up the game thanks to top scorer Kyle Jordan. Max Pemberton received his long throw back to him and then saw his cross was headed into the path of Kyle Jordan who dispatched a beautiful volley into the bottom corner.

After the hour mark, Tomas Poole almost made instant impact as he knocked the ball over the head of Darker before volleying over the bar.

Moments later, Steve Woolley switched play to the right flank where Liam Royles brought the ball down magnificently before threading it through for Moxam to turn and shoot but his effort cannoned off the post and wide.

Maltby were almost gifted a goal. David Reay tried to play out from the back but saw his pass take a nick of the thigh of Duggan and into the path of Steven Hopewell who dragged his volley wide of the mark.

Time was running out for either team to find a winner on Non-League Day.

On the stroke of full-time, Max Pemberton glanced a header wide from a deep Royles cross.

The referee blew for the last time this afternoon with the score-line even.

Game 33 // 12/10/18 - Sheffield Wednesday U23s 1-0 Crewe Alexandra U23s

Sheffield Wednesday Under 23s 1-0 Crewe Alexandra Under 23s

The Owls back to winning ways after Winnall’s Winner

The Young Owls were boosted by the return of the two Sams, Hutchinson and Winnall, as one of them kept it tight at the back whilst the latter scored the only goal of the game.
Wednesday lost their previous game 4-0 against Birmingham City and were looking to rectify their mistakes.

The Owls opened the chances just after the tenth minute mark. Conor Grant flicked it through to Sam Winnall who subsequently played the ball out to Stobbs with the outside of his boot. Jack Stobbs proceeded to cut onto his left peg but tamely fired towards goal where the keeper was on hand to hold the shot down low.

Moments later, Connor Heath tried a long ranged effort which was matched by an excellent save from Joe Wildsmith to palm it wide. The following corner was headed into the ground and over by Billy Sass-Davies.

Just after the twentieth minute, Lewis Reilly saw his fierce free-kick take a wicked deflection off the wall before whistling past the upright. Joshua Lundstram was then denied the opener as his powerful header was cleared off the line by Ben Hughes.

Sam Winnall marked his return from injury with a goal just before the half hour mark. Jack Stobbs provided the striker, who spent last season on loan at Derby County, with a low driven ball in which Winnall produced a smart finish to fire past David Richards.

Joe Wildsmith then produced a fine save to deny Lundstram as the midfielder had made a darting twenty yard run before the keeper pushed it behind.

With around ten minutes of the half remaining. Jack Stobbs sent a high ball towards the back stick where Connor Kirby nodded back across goal and over the keeper however, Richards did well to react and caught Kirby’s effort.

Alexandra countered and Malachi Linton was slotted down the right before he rifled a shot towards goal which was superbly saved by Wildsmith who managed to grab the ball at the second attempt.

On the stroke of half-time. Sam Winnall sharply cut in from the right and hammered a shot towards goal which beat the keeper but cannoned off the post which Stobbs failed to captitise on a free effort as he opted to chip it into the middle where Offord headed to safety.

The second period started slowly with both teams content with keeping the ball.

The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors. Joe Wildsmith showed his class as he rushed off his line, when Reilly had sneaked through the defences clutches, and lunged in to make the one-on-one save and avert the danger.

On the hour mark, Jack Stobbs turned in from the right and dispatched a tremendous curling effort which went just inches wide of the back post.

With twenty minutes to go, Stobbs’ low cross was cleared out only to Jordan Lonchar who flashed a shot over from the edge of the area.

Crewe had a glorious chance to equalise with five minutes to go. Joe Robbins hammered a ferocious strike, from twenty-five yards, towards goal which was well held by Wildsmith.

The Owls fled in numbers on the counter and Jack Stobbs disappointingly dragged his shot wide after taking on his man when he was threaded through by Kirby.

On the stroke of full-time, Eyad Hammoud squared it into the middle for Lonchar who laid the ball off for Conor Grant whose finely hit shot ricocheted off the post and wide.

The referee blew the whistle moments later as Wednesday kept the ball well to look after their slim one goal victory.

The Under 23s next take on Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday, 20th October where 5pm is the kick-off time.

Game 32 // 09/10/18 - Sheffield FC 1-3 Worksop Town

Sheffield FC 1-3 Worksop Town

Tigers come from behind to progress into the next round of the Senior Cup

The game started quite end to end and scrappy. Steve Woolley carried the ball towards the edge of the box but saw both of his attempts at goal blocked by, firstly, Start Ludlum and then Adam Chapman.

The latter then saw his powerful header, from a Mitchell Dunne corner, go across goal and towards the corner before it was headed away to safety by Matt Reay.

Moments later, Jamie Price fizzed an effort, which was headed towards the edge of the box by Ludlum, just wide of the bottom corner.

The host’s were almost gifted a goal. Matt Reay misjudged his header back to the keeper and Mitchell Dunne was clean through until Francis raced off his line to clear.

Sheffield F.C. struck first blood in the first quarter of the game. Charlie Wakefield had too much time and space in the centre which allowed the midfielder to line up his shot in which he dispatched perfectly as his effort was too strong for Francis to parry and nestled into the bottom corner.

Tomas Poole then tried an audacious effort from around thirty yards. Poole chested down a lovely switched ball from Price before smashing it just wide of the upright on the volley.

On the half hour mark, Town were back on level terms in strange fashion. Tomas Poole recognised the keeper wasn’t paying attention to play and fired past him for the equaliser.

Four minutes later, the Tigers went ahead in the tie. Steve Woolley’s free-kick was only pushed into the air by Matt Roney, who is normally deployed as midfielder, and into the air which was nodded home by Pemberton.

On the stroke of half-time, Woolley dispatched a fierce free-kick, from a similar range to his last, which was smartly parried away from goal by the makeshift keeper.

The first chance of the second period fell to ‘The Worlds First’. Ant Mackie saw his out-swinging cross headed towards goal by Marc Newsham but Francis was on hand to stop and hold  onto the effort.

Adam Chapman then glanced a header wide at the front post before Mitchell Dunne flashed a fierce shot across the face of goal and just inches wide.

Just after the half hour mark, Pemberton connected with Steve Woolley’s set-piece however, he could only head tamely into the ground and straight into the keepers hands.

Ten minutes later, Ehsan Mohammed wriggled away from his marker before rifling a shot just over the crossbar.

Worksop Town countered and the ball found its way to Tomas Poole on the right-hand side. Poole battled his way past Alfie Eagle and Jamie Yates before seeing his shot whistle past the far post.

FC were denied a blatant penalty in the last ten minutes. Mitchell Dunne darted into the box and was about to slide home the leveller until he was impeded by last ditch defending by Taylor. Everyone in the ground saw it was a penalty apart from the linesman and the referee.

With eight minutes to go, Worksop extended their advantage. Liam Royles picked the ball up and accelerated down the right before slamming his shot past the keeper after cutting inside.

On the stroke of full-time, Kyle Jordan should have put the game to bed. Jordan burst towards goal but failed to capitalise on his golden opportunity as his curling effort cannoned off the post before being cleared by Mackie.

The final whistle went moments later to confirm that the Tigers would be the team progressing into the next round.

Worksop Town next face Maltby Main on Saturday, 13th October at Sandy Lane. It is also non-league day and the club will be putting on a family friendly activities as well as competitions and drinks offers throughout the day!

Game 31 // 06/10/18 - Knaresborough Town 3-3 Worksop Town

Knaresborough Town 3-3 Worksop Town

Worksop leave it late to snatch a point

Worksop equalised on two occasions before Knaresborough Town looked like they had seen the game out for a good win until Matt Sykes popped up to slam home his shot and send the Tigers fans into raptures.
Kyle Jordan makes it 1-1 CREDIT: Mike Holmes

The host’s, before the tie, sat top of the tree after a great start to life in the NCEL Premier Division following their title winning campaign last season. In their previous fixture, Dan Thirkell netted in the dying embers to nick a 0-1 victory away at Thackley in midweek.

The Tigers thumped Athersley Rec 1-6 at Sheerien Park last time out to end a string of defeats.

The home side got off to a flying start. Ben Cohen accelerated down the left flank before the winger drilled the ball across goal to Nick Black who was on hand to slide in the opener.

The Tigers had their first opportunity of the game, ten minutes in. Steve Woolley carried the ball through the Knaresborough midfield before playing it to Craig Mitchell who subsequently set Sykes up for the shot in which he saw his effort flash across the face of goal and wide of the upright.

A quarter into the game, Knaresborough had two opportunities to double their advantage.

Firstly, Ben Cohen weaved his way into the area but Dave Reay rushed off his line and palmed the chance away to safety.

Will Lenehan then nodded a deep free-kick, from Dan Thirkell, into the middle where Sam Cook powered his header over the bar.

Moments later, the Tigers were almost on level terms. Max Pemberton switched the ball out to Steve Woolley who proceeded to cut inside and rifle a shot towards goal which cannoned off the post and went behind for a goal-kick.

The Tigers were on level terms just before the half hour mark. Matty Sykes rode a number of challenges down the left before pulling the ball back to Kyle Jordan who let it roll across his body body before firing a magnificent curling effort beyond the grasp of Liam Corbett, and into the bottom corner.

The game was back in favour of the host’s as ten minutes later, Rob Youhill used his quick feet to wrong-foot Matt Sykes and then he fizzed a low cross towards the back stick where Ben Cohen was free to easily tap home.

With five minutes to go until the break, Matt Sykes hammered one home to even the contest. From around thirty yards out, Matt Sykes was allowed too much space and the newly deployed wing-back proceeded to take a touch before rifling his shot over the keeper and into the back of the net. Everyone in at Manse Lane knew that the ball was heading in the back of the net the moment it left his foot!

The referee then blew for the break to allow both teams to regroup after a frantic first forty-five minutes.

The Tigers started the second half more positively as they conjured up two chances, in as many minutes.

Steve Woolley sprayed the ball onto the left where Sykes nutmegged his first man before dragging his shot wide of the far post.

Then in a similar move, Woolley threaded Sykes down the left but disappointingly, Sykes sliced his shot into the side-netting.

Moments later, Ben Cohen won a free-kick from around thirty yards away from goal. The winger whipped his set-piece around the wall and just inches wide of Dave Reay’s top left corner.

Just after the hour mark, Knaresborough Town regained the lead for the third time this afternoon. Debutant Julian Lawrence let his man race away from him which allowed Brad Walker to play a ‘give-and-go’ with Black before bending his shot, from similar range to Jordan’s first half strike, into the bottom corner.

Would the Tigers be able to equalise once more?

Steve Woolley then almost levelled things up with a trademark set-piece. His effort beat the wall but the keeper managed to scamper across and tip the goal-bound effort wide. The following corner came to nothing as Matt Reay misjudged his jump as he glanced it wide.

With ten minutes to go, Matt Sykes’ volley, from the edge of the area, deflected off Walker on its path to goal which took the pace off the ball allowing the keeper to easily gather it up.

Tomas Poole was brought on and he add a lot more energy into the game. He did brilliantly to set himself up for a shot, he knocked it past one player and chipped it over the next however, he failed to capitalise as he put the ball wide of the target whilst being shoved over.

Time was running out for the Tigers. Charlie Taylor headed Max Pemberton’s dinked cross from the right over from close range.

Tigers fans felt that was the last chance they’d have to equalise and Knaresborough supporters would have been licking their lips at the thought of extending their stint as table toppers.

However, in the final minute of injury time, Worksop Town made it 3-3. Matt Sykes’ first initial shot was desperately blocked by the legs of Greg Anderson but he made no mistake with his secondary effort as he slammed his shot under the keeper to snatch a point.

Referee brought proceedings to an end in a great advert for Northern Counties Eastern League football.

We next travel to Sheffield FC on Tuesday night in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup on Tuesday, 9th October.

Game 30 // 03/10/18 - Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 West Brom

Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 West Brom

Owls surrender lead as Baggies bounce back to snatch a point at Hillsborough.

Wednesday went ahead with another peach from Reach after twenty minutes. This was followed by a cool finish by Forestieri. The second half was an even contest until an own goal Joey Pelupessy and a Harvey Barnes strike levelled it up late into the contest.

Wednesday opened the chances in the first two minutes of the game. Adam Reach, who scored a wonder-goal against Leeds United on Friday, raced through the Albion backline as if they were not there before rifling his shot into the side-netting.

A quarter into the game, Ex-Owl, Chris Brunt, saw his free-kick flash just wide of Dawson’s top right corner.

Moments later, Forestieri tested Sam Johnstone from the edge of the area however, it should have been a routine save for the keeper but he make hard work of the shot as he spilled it but recovered quickly.

West Brom had a penalty shout minutes later. Harvey Barnes stabbed the ball through to Dwight Gayle who went down from the block of Hector but the referee blew for an alleged dive.

Wednesday took the lead in the twentieth thanks to another spectacular Adam Reach strike. Reach received a cut back from Onomah and proceeded to turn and hammer the ball into the top corner with his left foot.

Josh Onomah then took inspiration from his team mate Reach, as well as urges from the crowd to shoot, and hit an effort from thirty-five yards out which almost caught the keeper out as it took a wild deflection off Bartley but Johnstone managed to quickly change direction  to get down and hold it.

On the half hour mark, Adam Reach volleyed Fernando Forestieri’s dinked through-ball, just over the bar.

Wednesday doubled their advantage with less than five minutes to go.

Firstly, Jay Rodriguez’s whipped cross was was headed, by Lees, into the path of Tyrone Mears who cut across the ball and volley fiercely towards goal. However, Cameron Dawson made an incredible save to deny Tyrone Mears a certain equaliser.

The ball was then cleared up to Atdhe Nuhiu who held the it up on the edge of the box by weaving through defenders, before rolling the ball out to Matt Penny, who was crowned September player of the month. Penny’s floated cross into the middle was poorly flicked on by Craig Dawson into the path of Fernando Forestieri who was on hand to provide a calm finish past Johnstone.

On the stroke of half-time Dwight Gayle latched onto Rodriguez’s over the top assist but he could only fire his shot, on the volley, against the face of the bar.

The first major opportunity of the second period fell to the host’s. Atdhe Nuhiu pressed Kyle Bartley who squared a poor ball to Hegazi who was robbed of possession by Forestieri because the defender tried a Cruyff turn, but the forward fired wide of the target whilst off balance.

Minutes later, Forestieri had another chance disappear in front of his eyes. Michael Hector’s wayward shot turned out to be a perfect set up for Liam Palmer who nodded into the middle but the ball was put behind by Jay Rodriguez. Penney received the corner short but his low cross was cleared into the path of Forestieri whose his first time hit was saved down low by Johnstone.

Just after the hour mark, Wes Hoolahan dummied a ball into the path of Gareth Barry who saw his curling attempt whistle past the far post.

With thirteen minutes remaining, Forestieri threaded through Atdhe Nuhiu who, unfortunately, poked the ball wide of the target on the slide.

The visitors pulled a goal back with five minutes to go. Chris Brunt drilled a ball across goal towards the back stick where Joey Pelupessy converted into his own net while trying to stop Barnes from tapping home.

And just a minute later, Albion were frustratingly on level terms. Brunt subsequently shifted the ball to Harvey Barnes who accelerated through the Wednesday defence, avoiding four players who all hesitated to make a challenge, before cutting in and tucking his shot past Dawson who got a hand to the effort.

The full-time whistle went to the disappointment of both sides as West Brom must have felt they could have gone on to win the game where as the Owls were left stunned as they should have shut up shop.

The baggies next face Reading on Saturday, 6th October
