Sheffield Wednesday progressed into the next round after easing past local rivals Chesterfield. From start to finish the Owls played with a high tempo and gave the right response after Saturday’s disappointing performance away at Preston.
Fletcher almost had the Owls in front when his volley and subsequent shot were both saved well by the away shot stopper. Kristian Dennis opened the scoring in the 38th minute for the visitors from the penalty spot when Pudil handled the ball in the box. Wednesday levelled the tie as Hooper got a toe end onto a deflected Almen Abdi cross. Shortly after, Fletcher put the Owls in the lead on the stroke of halftime when he headed in a cross from Jack Hunt.
The League Two team had chances to level as Joe Wildsmith pushed over Dennis’s thunderous shot and O’Grady who could only find the side netting. Barry Bannan made the game 3-1 when the ‘wee Scottish man’ picked the ball up on half way, dribbled past 3 players and drilled a shot into the top corner. Substitute Sam Hutchinson put the tie to bed when he tucked home his own deflected cross after a darting run down the right hand flank. Wednesday were down to ten men due to an injury to Wildsmith as he clattered with the on rushing ex Owl Chris O’Grady. Up stepped Hutchinson who put on the gloves and saw out the final 5 minutes and earn his ‘clean sheet’.
The final whistle went and confirmed Wednesdays place in the next round with a 4-1 win. They now take on Bolton Wanderers away in the second round of the League Cup.
