Game 38 // 31/10/18 - Worksop Town 2-1 Winterton Rangers

Worksop Town 2-1 Winterton Rangers

Tigers fight into the next round on Fright Night

Worksop avoided the trick and got the treat as they played their way into the fourth round of the NCEL League Cup.
The Tigers were quick off the mark in the game as they kept the ball well and threw loads of men forward to try and catch out the visitors.

Matt Sykes was slotted down the left by Trench, in the fourth minute, and the winger floated a cross towards the back stick where Connor Brunt failed to make the necessary contact needed for the opener and the chance went wide.

Moments later, Liam Nelthorpe whipped a free-kick deep into the box but Matt Reay did enough to put off Robbie Start as the left-back nodded over.

The Tigers countered from that chance as Royles played it down the line for Connor Brunt to chase from which the striker accelerated down the right before seeing his cut-back smashed towards goal by Pemberton but blocked on the line by Rob Watson.

A quarter into the game, Connor Brunt did superbly to beat his man in the air and flick the ball leftwards to Matthew Sykes whose fierce strike was palmed wide by Dale Coy.

The Tigers opened the scoring when Craig Mitchell latched onto Matt Reay’s over the top through-ball to sweetly lob the out-rushing goalkeeper.

Tomas Poole then dispossessed Kieran Wressell of the ball and proceeded to hammer a shot, from thirty yards out, just inches wide of the post.

On the half hour mark, Town doubled their lead. Liam Royles switched the play from right to left as he perfectly picked out the run of Matt Sykes who took the ball in his stride and rifled his shot past Coy in between the sticks.

The final chance of the first half fell to the host’s. Robbie Start intercepted a sloppy pass from Brunt and subsequently sent Adam Lee through on goal but the number ten dragged his volley wide of the far post.

Both teams kept the ball well and before we knew it, the man in the middle brought proceedings to a halt for the break.

The home side started the second half emphatically. Tomas Poole saw his powerful strike ricochet off the underside of the bar, onto the line, and away from goal to the relief of the Rangers’ supporters.

Charlie Taylor then forced a header wide, at the near post, from a Steve Woolley corner.

On fifty-four minutes, Matt Reay’s header was blocked off the line by Jack Turnbull before Dale Coy somehow saved the rebounded effort from Craig Mitchell to deny the striker his brace.

On the hour mark, Tomas Poole jinked his way into the area before his drilled effort was held down low by the Winterton number one.

Dale Coy was then amongst the action once again. Firstly, he made a double save to deny Brunt and Poole, but soon after he did excellently to parry a one-on-one with Craig Mitchell who tried to tuck his shot round Coy.

With twenty minutes to go, Winterton Rangers halved the deficit in the tie. James Dean-Atkinson burst through the middle and saw his effort saved well down low by Dave Reay but the ball rolled out to Luke Anderson who passed his shot into the goal.

As we entered the last quarter of the game. Steve Woolley sent a set-piece deep into the box where Charlie Taylor headed into the middle for Matt Reay who nodded onto the post and the ball was cleared.

Worksop could have put the contest to bed with less than ten minutes remaining. Max Pemberton looped a Jordan cross onto the top netting from the edge of the box.

With three minutes to go, Adam Lee cut in from the right and fizzed a shot towards goal which was matched by Dave Reay who also held onto the effort.

Worksop shut up shop and saw out the remaining minutes to confirm their place in the next round.
