Game 33 // 12/10/18 - Sheffield Wednesday U23s 1-0 Crewe Alexandra U23s

Sheffield Wednesday Under 23s 1-0 Crewe Alexandra Under 23s

The Owls back to winning ways after Winnall’s Winner

The Young Owls were boosted by the return of the two Sams, Hutchinson and Winnall, as one of them kept it tight at the back whilst the latter scored the only goal of the game.
Wednesday lost their previous game 4-0 against Birmingham City and were looking to rectify their mistakes.

The Owls opened the chances just after the tenth minute mark. Conor Grant flicked it through to Sam Winnall who subsequently played the ball out to Stobbs with the outside of his boot. Jack Stobbs proceeded to cut onto his left peg but tamely fired towards goal where the keeper was on hand to hold the shot down low.

Moments later, Connor Heath tried a long ranged effort which was matched by an excellent save from Joe Wildsmith to palm it wide. The following corner was headed into the ground and over by Billy Sass-Davies.

Just after the twentieth minute, Lewis Reilly saw his fierce free-kick take a wicked deflection off the wall before whistling past the upright. Joshua Lundstram was then denied the opener as his powerful header was cleared off the line by Ben Hughes.

Sam Winnall marked his return from injury with a goal just before the half hour mark. Jack Stobbs provided the striker, who spent last season on loan at Derby County, with a low driven ball in which Winnall produced a smart finish to fire past David Richards.

Joe Wildsmith then produced a fine save to deny Lundstram as the midfielder had made a darting twenty yard run before the keeper pushed it behind.

With around ten minutes of the half remaining. Jack Stobbs sent a high ball towards the back stick where Connor Kirby nodded back across goal and over the keeper however, Richards did well to react and caught Kirby’s effort.

Alexandra countered and Malachi Linton was slotted down the right before he rifled a shot towards goal which was superbly saved by Wildsmith who managed to grab the ball at the second attempt.

On the stroke of half-time. Sam Winnall sharply cut in from the right and hammered a shot towards goal which beat the keeper but cannoned off the post which Stobbs failed to captitise on a free effort as he opted to chip it into the middle where Offord headed to safety.

The second period started slowly with both teams content with keeping the ball.

The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors. Joe Wildsmith showed his class as he rushed off his line, when Reilly had sneaked through the defences clutches, and lunged in to make the one-on-one save and avert the danger.

On the hour mark, Jack Stobbs turned in from the right and dispatched a tremendous curling effort which went just inches wide of the back post.

With twenty minutes to go, Stobbs’ low cross was cleared out only to Jordan Lonchar who flashed a shot over from the edge of the area.

Crewe had a glorious chance to equalise with five minutes to go. Joe Robbins hammered a ferocious strike, from twenty-five yards, towards goal which was well held by Wildsmith.

The Owls fled in numbers on the counter and Jack Stobbs disappointingly dragged his shot wide after taking on his man when he was threaded through by Kirby.

On the stroke of full-time, Eyad Hammoud squared it into the middle for Lonchar who laid the ball off for Conor Grant whose finely hit shot ricocheted off the post and wide.

The referee blew the whistle moments later as Wednesday kept the ball well to look after their slim one goal victory.

The Under 23s next take on Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday, 20th October where 5pm is the kick-off time.
