Sheffield Wednesday vs Barnsley

Attendance: 27,097
Goals: Reach (34’); Barnes (67’)
SWFC: Westwood; Hunt, Lees, van Aken, Pudil (Butterfield); Wallace (Joao), Lee, Bannan, Reach; Fletcher (Rhodes), Hooper
BFC: Davies; McCarthy, MacDonald, Lindsey, Yiadom; Hammill (Isgrove), McGeehan (Moncur), Williams, Barnes; Thiam (Potts), Bradshaw

The points were shared in the South Yorkshire Derby

Barnsley opened the chances when Cameron McGeehan’s freekick beat the wall but couldn’t beat Keiren Westwood as the Irish international got enough on the ball to keep it out.

Shortly after the visitors had another great chance to get their noses in front when van Aken could only managed to clear into the path of Hammill who hit his shot straight at Westwood.

Wednesday had their best chance of the half when Kieran Lee took Wallace’s pass in his stride and rifled his shot from 30 yards on to the face of the crossbar, the ball fell to Steven Fletcher but he couldn’t capitalise.

The Owls took the lead when Hooper ran the length of the edge of the box, Reach took the ball away from the Owls forward. Reach’s shot was blocked by his own leg as he slipped , the ball flew into the air and over the Tykes shot-stopper

Tom Lees could of made it two when Bannan chipped the ball to the back post, Lees headed it down but his header was saved by the legs of former Owls back up keeper Davies. That was all for the first half and the home side led 1-0.

Wednesday continued their dominance and went close when Bannan produced a moment of brilliance as he flicked the ball between two opposing players who then tackled each other. He ran out of danger and played it to Hooper who then switched play to Jack Hunt where the right back fired a shot agonisingly wide.

Barnsley started to slowly work their way back into the game as Harvey Barnes slalomed his way to the by-line and saw his cross slice across the crossbar and Wednesday cleared.

Barnsley levelled in the 67th minute when Andy Yiadom cased down a lost cause and passed it to winger Barnes who took it on to his right foot and curled it beautifully into the back of the net. Nothing Westwood could do to keep that out!

The Owls were in search of another goal by applying piles on piles of pressure for the rest of the game. Ex-Barnsley player Jacob Butterfield chipped the ball towards Hooper but Davies came out to claim the cross.

Davies was soon back in action when two minutes later Hunt crosses from the right into the middle of the box to Hooper who directed his header towards goal but Davies saved well

Wednesday could find that finishing touch and both teams walked away with a point each. Now for me, straight from Hillsborough and down the M1 to Sandy Lane for Worksop Town vs Parkgate
I arrived in the 27th minute....
