Game 44 // 14/11/18 -Sheff UTD U19s 6-0 Worksop Town U19s

Sheffield United 6-0 Worksop Town

Poor showing from the Tigers as the Blades cruise to victory.

United missed an early penalty but took the lead just before the break. In the second period, the home side purged to victory to beat Worksop Town 6-0.

The Blades had the first opportunity of the game. Liam Smart misjudged his clearance which fell into the path of Sam Alkroyd who cut across the body of Smith before dragging his shot wide of the post.

Sheffield United were awarded a penalty just after six minutes. Reon Potts darted into box where he was thwarted by the sliding challenge of Deegan Atherton. Sammy Ompreon stepped up but saw his spot kick kiss the post as his attempt went wide.

Moments later, Deegan Atherton glanced Jack Charlesworth’s corner just past the far post.

Clark Greaves then forced James Gamble into a save at his near post. Alfie Smith sliced his clearance into the path of the winger whose shot was patted away from Gamble’s top right corner by the number one.

Sammy Ompreon then cut in from the right and then rifled a shot towards the bottom corner but Gamble got down quickly to hold.

After twenty minutes, The Tigers broke away from United’s early pressure and almost conjured up a chance to open the scoring. Alfie Dodsworth cut open the home side’s backline to play Darien down the left where he cut in and crossed towards the back post. Liam Smart collected the ball and took it past Tom Weaver before floating it towards the back stick where Darien was just inches away from connecting with the header and the chance went begging.

On the hour mark, Tom Weaver was in space in the box when the ball fell to the centre-half from Potts’ corner. Weaver’s shot beat Gamble but was superbly blocked on the line by Jay Evison and the ball was cleared.

With five minutes remaining, skipper Alfie Smith looped his header over the bar after beating the offside trap to connect with Charlesworth’s delivery.

James Gamble then produced a magnificent save to deny Ompreon from point blank range.

‪United opened the scoring close to half-time. Clark Greaves burst down the right to latch onto a defence splitting through-ball, from Potts, before squaring it for Sam Alkroyd to tap home. ‬‬‬‬‬

The half-time whistle sounded with the team in red and white leading by only one goal.

Ten minutes after the restart, Tom Weaver dinked a ball into the middle for Jack Stainrod who saw his header saved down low by the Tigers keeper.

On the hour mark, Ryan Delello struck a thunderous volley, from twenty-five yards, which needed to be pushed over by Sam Kelly.

In the sixty fourth minute, United doubled their lead. James Gamble could only parry Reon Potts’ long ranged effort into the air where an unmarked Jack Stainrod was on hand to poke past the keeper

‪Three minutes later, a third was added to the home side’s tally. Gamble poorly lost possession on the edge of the box which allowed Sam Alkroyd to power into an open goal‬‬‬ for his brace. ‬‬

‪United rubbed salt into the Tigers wounds when Potts quickly slipped Harry Boyes down the left flank from a free-kick. The full-back subsequently fizzed it towards the back stick where Stainrod stroked home his second. ‬‬‬‬

Isaac Darien finally broke free from the United dominance to hammer a distanced shot just inches over the bar.

Moments later, Aaron Mushet cut in from the left but hit a tame effort towards goal which was easily stopped by Harrison Foulstone.

As we entered the last quarter, Liam Smart was dispossessed by Stainrod who accelerated towards goal but fluffed his shot wide.

‪Alkroyd completed his hat-trick three minutes from time as he tucked home the rebound after Gamble saved from Ompreon. ‬‬‬

In stoppage time, the Blades rounded off the goals with a header from Javelle Clark from which the keeper got fingertips too but it wasn’t enough as the ball bounced off the underside of the bar and over the line.

The full-time whistle went to the relief of the Tigers.

Game 43 // 10/11/18 - Worksop Town 2-2 Barton Town

Worksop Town 2-2 Barton Town

Tigers leave it late to snatch a point against Barton
The Tigers took the lead in the second minute of the game. Aaron Moxam pulled the ball back for Liam Royles to whip a ball towards the back stick where Matthew Plummer converted into his own goal.

Barton had their first opportunity of the game on the fifth minute mark. Tom Bennett tried his luck from thirty yards out but David Reay watched it all the way and caught the chance.

Moments later, Captain Nicky McNamara hit an effort towards goal, from a similar range to Bennett’s shot, but this time the ball flew high over the bar.

After twenty minutes, Aaron Moxam peeled off his marker to latch onto Trench’s through-ball before cutting it back for Matt Sykes who saw his left footed shot flash across goal and wide.

On the stroke of half-time, Charlie Taylor was on hand to clear Nicky McNamara’s forceful header from a corner away to safety.

Barton equalised two minutes after the restart. Nicky McNamara lost his marker, in the box, to glance Bennett’s corner past Reay.

Moments later, Charlie Taylor rose highest to power a corner, from Steve Woolley, over the bar.

Daniel Chambers then wriggled his way past Pemberton before curling a fierce effort wide of the upright.

Out of nowhere, Matt Plummer rifled an effort from around thirty-five yards out which needed parrying away by Reay in which he did so by palming the ball behind.

On the hour mark, David Reay kept the home side in the game with a crucial point blank save. Jack Binns threaded the ball through to Luke Aldrich who took a touch before trying to bend his shot around Reay but the Tigers number one magnificently tipped his shot wide.

Aldrich was slipped through once again by Binns but this time he was met by the sliding challenge of Charlie Taylor who stuck the ball behind for a corner which came to nothing.

The Tigers finally broke forward and almost went back in front. Kyle Jordan flicked the ball on for Aaron Moxam who jinked his way into the box but opted to curl an effort towards goal, instead of teeing up Sykes who was free in the area, and his shot was caught by Collins.

Barton Town doubled their lead from another set piece. Eddy Birch picked out the back post run of Owen Marshall who was there to nod across goal and into the back of net.

Worksop were desperate for the equaliser in order to keep up with the leading pack. Connor Brunt dinked the ball over the Barton backline for Craig Mitchell to run onto but the forward sliced his shot wide.

As we entered stoppage time, Craig Mitchell tried an audacious effort, on the swivel, from far out which narrowly went wide of the top corner.

Mitchell then did one better as the substitute popped up at the right time to snatch a point. A pump upfield bounced over the pack on the edge of the box and Mitchell was alert to tap past Collins.

Worksop held out the remaining seconds to steal the points from Barton who felt as though they should have seen the game out.

Game 42 // 08/11/18 - Worksop Town U19s 4-0 Hallam FC U19s

Worksop Town Under 19s 4-0 Hallam FC Under 19s

Tigers through to the semi-finals thanks to dominant display

Worksop Town played some very entertaining football as they cruised to a three goal advantage in the first half. In the second, the Tigers kept the ball well and added another to their tally from the corner before seeing out the game comfortably.
The first major opportunity of the game fell to the Tigers after ten minutes. Alfie Dodsworth twisted and turned his way into the area before drilling a ball across the face of goal which was just too quick for Delello to convert and the chance went begging.

The visitors replied with a chance of their own. Maasal Deerlove wrong footed his marker before rifling an effort towards goal which was held down low by Gamble.

A quarter into the game, Jack Charlesworth swung in a ball towards the six yard box which was poked over the bar by Smith.

Moments later, Alfie Dodsworth received a throw in short, from the right, and quickly pulled the ball back to Jay Evison whose long ranged effort was caught by the keeper.

Evison then had another chance to take the lead. McClaren’s in-swinging cross was chested down by Sam Jones who subsequently set-up Jay Evison for a shot in which he curled wide of the upright.

The Tigers opened the scoring just after the twentieth minute mark. Alfie Smith was on hand to tuck the ball home, at the back stick, when the ball popped out to him after a goalmouth scrabble.

Jake Thompson then tested Gamble from a free-kick as the Hallam forward aimed for the bottom corner however, the Tigers number one was alert and got down to stop the attempt from creeping in.

On the half hour mark, Alfie Dodsworth cut in from the right and rifled a low effort towards goal which was superbly tipped wide by Barnes

The Tigers doubled their lead when a cross from Jones deflected out towards the edge where Ryan Delello dispatched a fierce volley which flew past the keeper via a deflection.

With five minutes remaining, Jack Charlesworth added a third with a stunning effort, from thirty yards out, which dipped at the last moment to beat the keeper.

There was a scare for the Tigers five minutes after the restart. James Gamble misjudged the cross from Ballard and Thompson’s header towards goal was brilliantly blocked off the line by Charlesworth.

On the hour mark, Darien threaded the ball through to Alfie Dodsworth whose movement sent two defenders out of the way but the forwards shot was saved by the feet of Barnes.

The Tigers added a fourth goal to their tally when Isaac Darien powered Charlesworth’s corner past the keeper.

There was a long stoppage in play as the keeper, Oliver Barnes, went down clutching his knee after a collision with Aaron Mushet. We wish him all the best in his recovery.

Hallam had a sniff at goal as Charlie Cope burst through but as the substitute pulled the trigger, Deegan Atherton bravely slid in to block the shot and the ball was subsequently cleared.

The Tiger kept the ball for the rest of the game to confirm their place in the next round of the League Cup.

Special thank you to Roy who donated his Football Card winnings back to the club.

Game 41 // 07/11/18 - Worksop Town 0-1 Frickley Athletic

Worksop Town 0-1 Frickley Athletic

Ten men Tigers are narrowly beaten by Evo-Stik Frickley

It was a well fought battle between two old rivals at the Lane on a cool Wednesday night. Craig Mitchell was dismissed just before the break before Frickley finally chiselled their way through a tight Tigers backline to force their way into the next round.

The visitors were looking to get back on track after a 0-2 defeat against Morpeth Town on Saturday.

The same scoreline played out at Sandy Lane, at the weekend, but the points went in the hosts’ favour as the Tigers beat Goole AFC to complete their first double of the season.

The Tigers’ first opportunity of the game came on the fifth minute mark. Matt Sykes sharply spun his man before sending a fierce strike towards goal which went inches past the post.

Ex-Tiger Sam Liversidge almost marked his return with a goal. Tyler Walton squared the ball across to Liversidge who narrowly curled his effort wide of the upright.

Moments later, Liversidge cut in from the right but saw his low driven effort held down low by Reay.

Frickley were dominating the early stages of the game. Ben Algar rifled an effort from thirty yards out which proved too hot to handle for Reay as he split the effort at the first attempt but quickly pounced on the ball, at the second time of asking, and stop Walton from having an easy chance at goal.

Steve Woolley and Jacob Hazel both continued the trend of long ranged efforts but both saw their efforts travelled closely off target.

On the hour mark, Ben Algar fizzed a ball across goal for Jed Wilkinson whose flick on towards goal kissed the post before rolling into the advertising boards.

Moments later, Jacob Hazel was denied from twenty-five yards. The prolific forward wrong footed Jamie Price and struck a curling effort towards goal which was superbly tipped wide by David Reay.

With five minutes to go, Matt Sykes darted through the centre before threading the ball into the path of Craig Mitchell whose left footed strike parried wide by Warhurst.

On the stroke of half-time, the Tigers were reduced to ten men. Craig Mitchell was the culprit as he raised his hand after a collision between the striker and Jameel Ible.

The second half was mostly in favour of the visitors, with their man advantage. The Tigers’ back five stuck together and tried to restrict Athletic to long range efforts, like the first half.

Five minutes after the restart, Jed Wilkinson let the ball roll across his body before skipping the challenge of Pemberton and seeing his shot pushed wide by David Reay.

On the hour mark, Reay matched a well struck effort from Tyler Walton to palm it wide of his near post.

Liam Royles then bravely dove in to block a volley at the back post from Daniel Palmer.

The visitors took the lead with four minutes remaining, Lewis Szanto latched onto a pinpoint Jed Wilkinson through-ball to slide past the keeper.

Moments after, Connor Brunt was close to levelling the game. Sykes poked the ball through to the striker who hit his shot across the face of goal and wide.

Brunt then turned provider as he beat his man for pace to pull the ball back to Kyle Jordan who fluffed his shot over the bar.

In stoppage time, Jacob Hazel had the chance to put the game to bed. Hazel escaped the attention of Pemberton to take Szanto’s slipped ball into his stride and accelerated towards goal. He entered the box from the right but Hazel was met by Reay who did enough to deflect the ball behind for a corner which ultimately came to nothing.

The full-time whistle sounded minutes later to confirm the Tigers would be bowing out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup at the Third Round stage.

Worksop Town are again back at Sandy Lane, on Saturday, 10th November, as they welcome Barton Town to S80. Where as the visitors face Belper Town in their next fixture on Saturday, 17th November.

Game 40 // 03/11/18 - Sheffield Wednesday 0-4 Norwich City

Sheffield Wednesday 0-4 Norwich City

City move top of the table with a heavy win over the Owls

A tale of two halves was in store at Hillsborough. Wednesday edged the first but just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net before Norwich dominated the second period to sink the Owls into seventeenth.

The Owls should have opened the scoring in the third minute. Adam Reach floated a ball towards the back stick where Steven Fletcher headed it across goal and the ball fell to the feet of Matt Penney who teed up Josh Onomah but the Spurs loanee somehow squandered his shot over the bar from close range.

Norwich were awarded a penalty two minutes later as the referee judged Daniel Pudil to have tripped Vrancic in the area. Marco Vrancic stepped up but saw his poorly executed spot kick saved and held by Cameron Dawson.

A quarter into the game, Bannan’s corner was headed out by Zimmermann to Matt Penney who saw his well struck volley take a wicked deflection which almost caught out Tim Krul but the Dutch international was relieved to see the ball bounce past his far post.

Atdhe Nuhiu then went close when Bannan chipped the ball over to Steven Fletcher who headed the ball across the box for Nuhiu who looped his chance over the bar. The linesman had already raised his flag for offside so it ultimately wouldn’t have counted if Nuhiu could have converted.

Tom Lees had a low driven shot, from Nuhiu’s flick on, saved down low by Krul.

On the half hour mark, Buendia found an unmarked Pukki in the box who subsequently flicked the ball on for Onel Hernandez but the winger struck his effort inches wide of Dawson’s near post.

Moments later, Adam Reach played a one-two with Fletcher before rifling a shot towards goal which was parried by Krul into the path of Onomah who fluffed his lines and skied his shot over the bar.

Barry Bannan tried his luck from thirty-five yards as he hit a thunderous effort towards goal which needed to be palmed behind by Krul. From the corner, Daniel Pudil saw his miscued volley glanced wide at the last second by Fletcher.

The half-time whistle went to end a strong half for the Owls. This trend wasn’t set to continue though…

City took the lead six minutes after the restart. Onel Hernandez’s pass was deflected by Pudil perfectly into the path of Pukki who slotted his shot past Cameron Dawson.

Pukki almost bagged his brace moments later. Buendia switched the ball to the forward who was unmarked. Pukki took the ball in his stride before seeing his effort saved down low by Dawson.

Norwich doubled their lead five minutes after the opener. Buendia was on hand to take the ball past his marker before stroking his shot past Dawson.

This was followed by a cry of ‘Oh Sammy Sammy Sammy Hutchinson’ and ‘One Keiren Westwood’ in protest from the crowd.

On the hour mark, Norwich had put the game to bed as Pukki was on hand in the middle to tap home from Buendia’s cross.

Wednesday’s first major opportunity of the second period came when Adam Reach threaded the ball through to Atdhe Nuhiu. The Kosovan international hit his shot, on the swivel, which in the end was a routine save for Tim Krul.

With twenty minutes to go, Steven Fletcher lined up a shot from long range which went miserably wide.

Dennis Srbeny added a fourth goal with his first touch of the afternoon. Cameron Dawson scuffed his clearance into the path of Vrancic who subsequently teed up the substitute for an easy tap in.

Dawson then produced a fine double save to deny first Hernandez, and then Srbeny on the follow up.

Barry Bannan’s dinked cross from out wide almost caught out the keeper as the ball kissed the crossbar before nestling on top of the goal.

The final whistle soon sounded to the relief of the Wednesday supporters. Is it time for Jos Luhukay to go? Leave your comments below…

The Owls next face Steel City rivals Sheffield United, on Friday 9th November, at Bramall Lane.

Norwich welcome Millwall to Carrow Road on Saturday the 10th.

Game 39 // 01/10/18 - Worksop Town U19s 2-0 Dronfield Town U19s

Worksop Town U19s 2-0 Dronfield Town U19s

The Tigers beat Dronfield with a dominant second half performance.

The Under 19s make it six games unbeaten with a win over Dronfield Town. A tight first half was suddenly shrugged into the Tigers favour with goals from Dodsworth and Evison which confirmed all three points for the team in Amber and Black.

The Tigers opened the chances in the tenth minute. Jack Shaw whipped in a free-kick towards the back-post where Alfie Smith connected with the ball but saw his shot blocked on the line by Zach Bell. The ball popped out to Liam Smart who sliced over the rebound.

Dronfield then replied with a chance of their own. Travis Hodgson sent a corner towards the back stick where Ethan Flower rose highest but headed high over the bar.

A quarter into the game, Alfie Dodsworth, who scored last night for Maltby Main’s first team against Thackley, lost his marker on the edge of the box and created space for himself to have a shot from which he ultimately fizzed over the bar.

A fiercely hit Travis Hodgson free-kick was matched by James Gamble who managed to punch the ball away to safety.

On the half hour mark, Kyle Blake burst through the middle before slamming a shot from twenty-five yards towards goal which, again, was superbly saved and held down low by Gamble.

Moments later, Travis Hodgson robbed Smith of the ball and advanced towards goal where Gamble made himself big and the forward rifled his shot wide of the upright.

Both sides shared possession of the ball, for the last ten minutes, with little clear cut chances made and eventually, the referee blew for half-time.

The visitors started the second half emphatically. James Gamble was forced into a save as he got down to push Hodgson’s low driven shot wide of the far post.

Moments later, Kyle Blake was threaded through by Dominic Charles but the winger slotted his shot into the side-netting.

‪The Tigers took the lead just after the half hour mark. Jack Shaw’s free-kick was met by the head of Alfie Smith who headed towards goal. The keeper spilt the effort allowing Jay Evison to poke the ball across for Alfie Dodsworth who coolly slotted home the opener. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

‪The home side’s advantage was doubled minutes later. The roles for the first goal were reversed as Alfie Dodsworth produced a fine corner for Jay Evison to glance his header past the keeper. ‬‬‬‬

Worksop thought they had put the game to bed with twenty minutes to go. Deegan Atherton made a late run into the box to head home Jack Shaw’s flag-kick but the referee blew for a foul in the box and disallowed the goal.

As we entered the last quarter of the game, Aaran Bovis struck a fierce free-kick towards goal which was well held by the keeper.

On the stroke of full-time, Josh Buxton was sent through on goal by Luke Parkin however, James Gamble rushed off his line and made the crucial save needed to preserve his clean sheet.

The Tigers saw out the game to carry on their recent good form. This means they have collected sixteen points from seven games and go top of the league.

After the fixture, we caught up with the gaffer about his side’s performance, his time in charge and next weeks Cup game against Hallam FC…

I think in the first half we wasn’t at our standard, it wasn’t good enough. We addressed that at half-time and said a few home truths but we didn’t change anything, apart from bringing off ‘Smarty’ as he was injured, as I knew the lads that were in there are good enough to win this game. We always believed that we would dominate the second half. We just needed to be a bit better against sides like this and the better sides, what know that we can’t just turn up and expect to win the game but we came out and dominated from the front, we got the ball back quickly when we lost it and we should have scored three or four if I’m honest but I’m pleased with the result. I don’t think it was our best performance but it shows we’re a good side if we are playing poor and still winning.

I think the first game of the season came too early for us, it is a new group of lads, a brand new Under 19s side, and to be fair to them it hasn’t took much time to get going. The last two to three weeks have been brilliant results and performances. From the Sheffield United game we needed more out of that, I don’t like to blame referees but he killed us a little with a few decisions. Against Sheffield FC it was an all around good performance. The first half we dominated and in the second we sunk our teeth in and got stuck into the game. All the management and the lads were buzzing in the changing room after that game. It was good to watch and it showed what we were about as a side and what we are trying to achieve this season.

“We approach next week the same as every league game. It is a chance to go on a run and get into the semi-final. We’ve already played Hallam. They were a tough side in the first fifteen minutes but we dominated the whole game after. I hope we will do the same again. I might make a few changes, we’ll have to see throughout the week but ultimately we want to keep winning games and keep this habit up.

“You know what you will get with us. You know you’ll get a performance where the lads will give everything. I know it is cold but, especially the last few weeks, these lads will be something special at the end of the season and what we want to achieve and where we going, it is well worth a watch”.

Game 38 // 31/10/18 - Worksop Town 2-1 Winterton Rangers

Worksop Town 2-1 Winterton Rangers

Tigers fight into the next round on Fright Night

Worksop avoided the trick and got the treat as they played their way into the fourth round of the NCEL League Cup.
The Tigers were quick off the mark in the game as they kept the ball well and threw loads of men forward to try and catch out the visitors.

Matt Sykes was slotted down the left by Trench, in the fourth minute, and the winger floated a cross towards the back stick where Connor Brunt failed to make the necessary contact needed for the opener and the chance went wide.

Moments later, Liam Nelthorpe whipped a free-kick deep into the box but Matt Reay did enough to put off Robbie Start as the left-back nodded over.

The Tigers countered from that chance as Royles played it down the line for Connor Brunt to chase from which the striker accelerated down the right before seeing his cut-back smashed towards goal by Pemberton but blocked on the line by Rob Watson.

A quarter into the game, Connor Brunt did superbly to beat his man in the air and flick the ball leftwards to Matthew Sykes whose fierce strike was palmed wide by Dale Coy.

The Tigers opened the scoring when Craig Mitchell latched onto Matt Reay’s over the top through-ball to sweetly lob the out-rushing goalkeeper.

Tomas Poole then dispossessed Kieran Wressell of the ball and proceeded to hammer a shot, from thirty yards out, just inches wide of the post.

On the half hour mark, Town doubled their lead. Liam Royles switched the play from right to left as he perfectly picked out the run of Matt Sykes who took the ball in his stride and rifled his shot past Coy in between the sticks.

The final chance of the first half fell to the host’s. Robbie Start intercepted a sloppy pass from Brunt and subsequently sent Adam Lee through on goal but the number ten dragged his volley wide of the far post.

Both teams kept the ball well and before we knew it, the man in the middle brought proceedings to a halt for the break.

The home side started the second half emphatically. Tomas Poole saw his powerful strike ricochet off the underside of the bar, onto the line, and away from goal to the relief of the Rangers’ supporters.

Charlie Taylor then forced a header wide, at the near post, from a Steve Woolley corner.

On fifty-four minutes, Matt Reay’s header was blocked off the line by Jack Turnbull before Dale Coy somehow saved the rebounded effort from Craig Mitchell to deny the striker his brace.

On the hour mark, Tomas Poole jinked his way into the area before his drilled effort was held down low by the Winterton number one.

Dale Coy was then amongst the action once again. Firstly, he made a double save to deny Brunt and Poole, but soon after he did excellently to parry a one-on-one with Craig Mitchell who tried to tuck his shot round Coy.

With twenty minutes to go, Winterton Rangers halved the deficit in the tie. James Dean-Atkinson burst through the middle and saw his effort saved well down low by Dave Reay but the ball rolled out to Luke Anderson who passed his shot into the goal.

As we entered the last quarter of the game. Steve Woolley sent a set-piece deep into the box where Charlie Taylor headed into the middle for Matt Reay who nodded onto the post and the ball was cleared.

Worksop could have put the contest to bed with less than ten minutes remaining. Max Pemberton looped a Jordan cross onto the top netting from the edge of the box.

With three minutes to go, Adam Lee cut in from the right and fizzed a shot towards goal which was matched by Dave Reay who also held onto the effort.

Worksop shut up shop and saw out the remaining minutes to confirm their place in the next round.
