Sheffield Wednesday Under 23s looked to get back to winning ways after drawing in their previous two fixtures against Cardiff City and Coventry City, which ended 1-1 and 2-2 respectively.

Colchester United Under 23s have lost all their fixtures this season with the latest defeat coming against The Owls’ steel city rivals, in which the Blades ran out 0-3 victors.

Wednesday took the lead three minutes in. Gary Hooper slipped Jack Stobbs, who escaped the offside trap, down the right flank. Stobbs drilled the ball across goal towards Fraser Preston however, Oliver Kensdale ended up poking the ball past Vose and into his own net.

Wednesday almost doubled their lead a minute later. Kieran Lee nicked the ball off Aaron Barnes and switched the ball out to Jack Stobbs who quickly slotted Hooper through. Unfortunately, Hooper’s first touch was poor and the keeper gathered up the loose ball.

In the sixteenth minute, Jack Stobbs cut in from the right and riled an attempt straight into the midriff of Vose who caught comfortably.

Gary Hooper almost got on the scoresheet after twenty minutes. Jack Stobbs threaded the prolific forward through but Hooper slotted inches wide of the post.

Hooper then turned provider but still Wednesday couldn’t add to their tally. Stobbs crossed into the middle where Kensdale cleared into the back of Marshall. The ball fell to the feet of Hooper who dummied the shot before squaring it to Preston whose effort was superbly saved by the keeper. Following the corner, Connor O’Grady powered his header wide of the front post.

Colchester’s first chance came five minutes before the break. Ryan Gondoh hit his free-kick, from twenty-five yards out, way over the bar and into the stand.

The half-time whistle went with Wednesday leading by a goal to nil.

The second half started very slowly. Wednesday were on top and keeping possession well where as United kept tight and compact.

The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors in the seventy-first minute. Gondoh turned O’Grady and accelerated towards goal but the striker dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Wednesday made it 2-0 with less than fifteen minutes to go. Good work from Jordan Lonchar allowed him to escape his marker and tee up Morgan Fox on the edge of the box who beautifully dispatched a curling effort into the top corner.

Colchester pulled a goal back thanks to Noah Chilvers from the penalty spot with eight minutes remaining.

Kirby could of put the game to bed on the stroke of full-time. The ball fell to Kirby, twelve yards out, but the midfielder fluffed his lines and sliced his shot over the bar.

Minutes later, Jordan Lonchar turned Callum Anderson inside out before firing across the face of goal and wide.

Wednesday saw the game out to claim the victory at Hillsborough.
