Game 6 24/07/18 - Mansfield Town 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Mansfield Town 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Stags beat the Owls before an unfriendly ending

Benning opened the scoring just before half-time. Hamilton then saw his cross deflect off Adam Reach and in for the home side’s second goal before Reach netted for Wednesday minutes later. At the end of the game a brawl between both sides broke out to add an ugly finish.

The first chance of the game fell to the visitors. Barry Bannan’s over the top ball was misjudged by Benning as he headed the cross into the path of Liam Palmer however the wing back saw his soft effort caught by Conrad Logan at the near post.

Moments later, Liam Palmer cut the ball back for Atdhe Nuhiu. The Kosovan international cut across his marker and disappointingly curled his effort wide of the top left-hand corner.

The hosts had a golden opportunity to take the lead twenty minutes in. Jacob Mellis dinked the ball over the top to CJ Hamilton, who had escaped the attention of the Wednesday back-line, but the winger failed to take the opportunity as his volleyed effort was scuffed wide.

The League Two side almost took the lead on the half hour mark. Hamilton once again got in behind the Owls defence however as he pulled the trigger, Morgan Fox bravely dove in and blocked the effort sending it out for a corner. A minute later, Otis Khan saw his cross into the box diverted towards goal by Atdhe Nuhiu but luckily for the away side, Cameron Dawson was alert to push the chance over the bar from close range.

The Stags took the lead just before the break. Liam Palmer made an excellent block to deny Khan however the ball fell to Malvind Benning who struck a fierce effort across goal which hit the inside of the post and went in.

The second half started with the Owls missing an almost certain equaliser. Liam Palmer latched onto Barry Bannan’s through-ball and delivered an accurate low cross to Atdhe Nuhiu who somehow hit the woodwork from six yards out.

Things got worse for the team in blue and white as Mansfield doubled their lead. CJ Hamilton beat Adam Reach to an MacDonald pump upfield. Hamilton saw his cross deflect off Adam Reach and fly past the wrong footed Cameron Dawson.

Reach then pulled one back for the Owls minutes later. Reach volleyed a cross along the edge of the area towards goal with his weak foot. He saw his thunderous strike defect off Krystian Pearce and past Logan.

There was a penalty shout for the Championship side with ten minutes remaining. Bannan threaded Fernando Forestieri through on goal. As Forestieri was about to pull the trigger, he was brought down by Hamilton but the referee waved play on.

Walker then could have sealed the win for his team. Walker took aim from outside the box and saw his effort saved by Dawson. Left-back Benning then fired his follow-up effort wide.

The friendly turned ugly with minutes remaining. Following a late challenge on Hayden White, many players surrounded Fernando Forestieri with Krystian Pearce in particular being the most aggressive and was sent off.

The referee ended proceedings bang on the ninetieth minute mark but another brawl spilled out when a Mansfield substitute charged at Forestieri from the bench. Tempers flared until other players split the culprits away from each other and escorted down the tunnel.

Wednesday next take on Villarreal at Hillsborough this Saturday, 28th July. Where as Mansfield Town take on Rotherham United at Field Mill also on Saturday.
