#GAME80 03/04/18 Worksop Town Ladies 6-2 Socrates

Worksop Town Ladies 6-2 Socrates

Ladies Win To Continue Their Rein At The Top

A very damp scene was set at Sandy Lane for a Ladies fixture against Socrates. Everyone waited to see if the game was going to go ahead due to the standing water on the field. Concerns for safety were addressed however the team convinced the referee to see how it went, and we are glad he did.

The Tigers were quick out of the blocks as they went close to going ahead in the opening minute. Gordon escaped the attention of her marker and ran through on goal. Billie Gordon rounded the keeper but Peg Murray-Evans got back to stop a certain goal. Then from the corner, Hayley Hirst saw her shot ricochet off the crossbar and cleared only to Brooks who hit it from range but saw her effort nestle on the top of the net.

Worksop started emphatically and were inches away from taking the lead. Billie Gordon played a perfectly weighted ball towards the penalty spot. Lucy Robinson beat her marker but unfortunately, Robinson stabbed it just wide of the post.

A minute later, Worksop took the lead. Gordon cut in from the left and fired towards goal. Ella Williams got down to and get a hand to the shot but Lucy Robinson was the quickest to react as she poked the ball past the keeper.

The home side doubled their lead in the eleventh minute through top scorer Leah Hardy. Hirst picked out the run of Hardy and slotted her through. The keeper rushed off the line but Leah bravely slid in to stab the ball past Ella Williams.

The Ladies added another goal to their tally just after the half hour mark. A well worked goal started with Brooks who won possession and switched it out to the left to Brooke Chappell. Chappell passed to Gordon who subsequently chipped the ball over to Hardy. Leah Hardy ran through two defenders before squaring the ball dangerously across goal. The keeper spilt the set-up into the path of Gordon who was on hand to tap into a free goal.

Ellie Sheehan went close to getting herself on the scoresheet. Her attempted cross had beaten the keeper however the ball cannoned off the crossbar and away from danger.

Moments later, The Tigresses made it 4-0. Hardy’s corner was volleyed towards goal by Shannon Brooks. Her shot hit a Socrates defender before sitting in the six yard area. Chappell stretched a leg out to jab it through the keepers legs before she could pounce on the ball.

On the stroke of halftime, Socrates pulled a goal back from the penalty spot. Becky Hargreaves was thwarted just inside the area as she looked to shoot. Paula Higgins stepped up and, despite Beth Heaps guessing the correct way, she powered the ball into the bottom left.

The halftime whistle went soon after the away side’s goal. The pitch had held up well and hadn’t cut up at all.

Just like the first half, Worksop started quickly, Hardy won a freekick just left-centre of the box. Gordon whipped the set-piece over the wall but keeper Williams got down low to hold the attempt.

Despite the dominance that the Ladies showed, Socrates slowly crept back into the game to try and catch up with their title rivals. Ronnie Hendra beat her woman and crossed into the middle. The ball fizzed up into the air from Hargreaves’ first touch. Hargreaves swivelled and volleyed at goal but Heaps got down swiftly and caught the shot.

Ten minutes later, the ball popped out to the feet of Lissa Woodhouse after a scramble in the area. Disappointingly for the away side, Woodhouse saw her shot brilliantly parried wide by Heaps.

The biggest scare of Socrates’ second half chances so far came twenty minutes from time. Hendra found space in the Tigers final third and hit a thunderous effort towards the target. Heaps spilt the ball but got down just in time to block Hargreaves’ follow up shot.

Leah Hardy went close to bagging her second goal of the game. Hardy’s mazy run ended with her hammering a shot straight at the Socrates number one.

It was then Gordon’s turn to have another dig at goal. Gordon dispossessed Lizzy Marshall of the ball and darted towards goal, along the byline. She rifled a shot towards the net, hoping to sneak it in between the post and the keeper, but the ball hit the frame of the goal and went out for a goalkick.

With six minutes to go, the visitors halved the deficit. Hargreaves saw her fierce effort at goal palmed by Heaps into the path of Sophie Shemeld who tapped into the goal.

However several minutes later, Worksop put any nerves to bed as Gordon got her second goal of the game. Nisha Lea held up the ball on the edge of the box before laying the ball off to Billie Gordon who curled her shot into the bottom corner.

In the final minute of normal time, Hardy bagged her brace to confirm all three points for the Tigresses. Leah Hardy slalomed her way past three opposing defenders before tucking her shot past the keeper.

The fulltime whistle went to confirm the Ladies’ second win in three games, scoring twelve goals in the process. They next take on Oughtibridge at Sandy Lane this Sunday.

STAR WOMAN: Shannon Brooks
Yet again Brooks’ was mentioned in high regard after her performance on Sunday and Tuesday. She was like a brick wall in midfield but also created many great chances. She seemed to cover every blade of grass. Shannon’s biggest aspect is how she carries the team vocally whether it is positional sense or jeering everyone up.
