Worksop Town Ladies 6-3 Worksop Town Junior Ladies

Ladies Win the Worksop Derby to go Top

Worksop Town Ladies defeated their Worksop rivals Worksop Town Junior Ladies at Sandy Lane. This win sees the Ladies go top of the league with two games in hand.

(Worksop Town Ladies will be referred as Ladies and Worksop Town Junior Ladies will be referred as Juniors. I couldn’t get hold of a team sheet for the Juniors so players will be referred as, for example, J9)

The Derby sparked into life early into the game as the Ladies took the lead after nine minutes. Top Scorer Leah Hardy won the ball off of J6 who failed to clear her lines. Hardy ran through and slotted her shot past the Juniors’ keeper.

Worksop Town Ladies’ lead was doubled a few minutes later as Hardy went from goalscorer to provider. Abbie Lister won the ball at the back and gave it to Leah Hardy. Hardy turned and sent Billy Gordon through on goal. Gordon raced forward and accurately chipped the outrushing Juniors Keeper.

Moments later, Juniors refused to lay down and be beaten as they pulled a goal back. J11 latched onto a defence splitting pass from J21. J11 took the ball towards the right of the box before passing the ball past Kathryn Wood.

The Ladies were on the attack once again as they went close to adding to their lead. Gordon set Bell free by playing a perfectly weighted pass down the left. Lauren Bell cut across her marker and fired just wide of the post.

Minutes later, Leah Hardy almost got on the scoresheet again. She played a ‘give and go’ with Sian Kamil before rifling a shot straight at the keeper.

The Ladies extended their lead by scoring two goals in two minutes. Firstly, Mollie Cartwright played to ball over the top for Laura Elsworth to take in her stride before tucking her shot calmly past the keeper. Then Leah Hardy slalomed her way past two markers before showing her brilliant finishing ability by curling the ball into the bottom corner to net her brace.

The Juniors were hot on their town rivals’ heels as they pulled another goal back with ten minutes remaining on the clock the first half. After a scramble in the box, the ball fizzed up into the air. Wood attempted to come out to claim the ball but missed it and the ball bounced into the net. Wood was then booked for her protests about a suspected foul in the build up.

The halftime whistle went with the home side leading by a two goal margin.

The second half began with drama three minutes after restart. Abbie Lister brought down the Juniors winger, although many people called for offside, and referee Michael Layton pointed to the spot. J2 stepped up and saw her penalty saved by Wood.

Several minutes later, the visitors edged closer to equalising as they made it 4-3. Juniors saw their inswinging corner spilt by Kathryn Wood into the path of J4 who stabbed the ball into the back of the Tigers net.

Juniors then had the chance to level the game ten minutes after halftime. J12 dispossessed Woolley of the ball and headed towards goal. Despite having more space, J12 fired early at goal and Wood caught the attempt comfortably. The Ladies countered, a good interchange of passing between Robinson, Gordon and Hardy ended with Gordon shooting from the edge of the box. The shot was tame and J1 caught with ease.

Robinson made a big impact when she came off the bench. She had two good chances to get on the scoresheet. Sheehan made a good run from fullback and played the ball along the edge of the box to Robinson who curled her shot straight at the keeper. A minute later, she tackled the Juniors right back and sprinted towards goal. Robinson attempted to sneaked her shot in between the post and the keeper however she saw he effort cannon of the woodwork and out for a goalkick.

Just after the hour mark, the Tigresses added to their tally once again through substitute Lucy Robinson. Gordon received the ball on halfway. She cleverly flick the ball up and kicked the it over her head through to Nisha Lea who subsequently squared it to Leah Hardy. Hardy dummied the ball through her legs and advanced towards the keeper. As J1 rushed out, Leah unselfishly passed sideways for Robinson to tap home.

J12 and J21 were the main attacking outlets for the Juniors, they linked up on 65 minutes to try and get back into the game. J21 barged her way into the box before poking the ball back to J12 who shot first time. The shot didn’t really trouble Wood as she got down to hold onto the ball. Wood then pumped the ball up field to Robinson. Lucy darted goal-bound, she rounded the keeper and unfortunately shot into the sidenetting.

The Ladies put the final nail in the Juniors coffin as four minutes after their fifth goal of the afternoon, they scored another to put the result beyond doubt. Shannon Brooks, who was solid all game, sent a great ball over the top for Hardy to run on to. Hardy out-paced her woman and knocked the ball around the keeper which allowed Nisha Lea to smash into an empty goal.

Hardy was again providing the Ladies team with chances, she set up Robinson with five minutes to go, however Lucy Robinson was unluckily denied a second of the game. Hardy great movement dragged defenders away from the Ladies winger. The space created allowed Hardy to squeeze it through to Robinson who chipped the ball over the keeper. The ball bounced off the post and back out into the six yard where the keeper picked it up.

The final whistle went to confirm that the Ladies would be top of the league with two games in hand. They only need five more mins to be crowned champions, they next face Socrates at Sandy Lane on Tuesday 3rd of April, 7.45pm Kickoff. As for Juniors, they still see themselves rock bottom of the table.

STAR WOMAN: Leah Hardy
It was a close one between Shannon Brooks and Leah Hardy. I went with the latter as she was a class above everyone on the pitch. She scored two goals and contributed by picking up three assists as well. She was the spearhead of all the home sides attacks and played out of her skin. She also was very vocal and linked play very well.

Attendance: 31
Goals: Hardy (9’,27’), Gordon (12’), Elsworth (26’), Robinson (62’), Lea (66’); Juniors (14’, 35’, 52’)

WTLFC: Kathryn Wood, Ellie Sheehan, Kirsty Woolley, Shannon Brooks, Mollie Cartwright, Abbie Lister (Lucy Robinson), Lauren Bell, Laura Elsworth (Beth Heaps), Leah Hardy, Billy Gordon, Sian Kamil (Nisha Lea)
