Game 29 // 29/09/18 - Athersley Rec 1-6 Worksop Town

Athersley Rec 1-6 Worksop Town

Tigers end run of losses with big win against Athersley

The Tigers got back to winning ways with a magnificent performance against a struggling Recreation side. Sykes, Mitchell and Price fired Town into the lead before Wright pegged one back with minutes remaining until the break. Worksop’s class prevailed in the second period as they limited the home side’s options as Mitchell and Sykes added their second, with Brunt finishing off the scoring with a neat strike of his own.

After a scrappy first ten minutes, Worksop had the first major opportunity of the contest. Steve Woolley weaved his way towards the edge of the area before pulling his shot wide of the near post.

Worksop took the lead after a quarter into the game. Matt Sykes drilled a low shot across goal which clipped the post as it nestled into the bottom corner.

Twenty minutes in, Kyle Jordan split open the Athersley defence with a ball over the top to Craig Mitchell who lacked the composure needed as he volleyed straight into the keeper’s midriff.

Moments later, the Tigers doubled their lead. Craig Mitchell was slipped through by Kyle Jordan and the forward made up for his earlier opportunity as he tucked his shot past Dan Morton.

Just before the half hour mark, the skipper added to the Town’s tally. A perfect Steve Woolley free-kick was met by Jamie Price who powered his header past Morton.

Athersley pulled a goal back with five minutes to go of the opening forty-five. A corner was headed back into the middle by Copping for Lee Garside who was on hand to nod into the roof of the net.

On the stroke of half-time, Laurie Wilson saw his fierce strike fly just over the bar. Then Steve Woolley’s set-piece was flicked wide by Mitchell at the near post.

Worksop opened the second half chances as Steve Woolley aimed for goal from a free-kick however, the keeper saw it all the way and held onto the ball at his left-hand post.

There were little clear-cut chances up towards the hour mark. Steve Woolley acted the catalyst in two different moves which involved one-two’s with Royles and Mitchell but both outcomes ended in Darce blocking each cross out for a corner which both, in the end, came to nothing.

Steve Woolley then saw a thirty-yard strike whistle past the keepers left and into the advertising boards.

Declan Dawson then forced David Reay into a good save as the Worksop number one parried his downward header, from the corner, wide of Reay’s near post.

Craig Mitchell bagged his brace when the number nine latched onto a Reay pump forward and accelerated towards goal before slamming his shot past the keeper.

Minutes later, Sykes matched Mitchell in getting his second of the game. Royles picked out the unmarked Kyle Jordan who controlled the ball perfectly. ‘KJ’ unselfishly dummied the shot and slipped Sykes through to stroke it past Morton.

With ten minutes remaining, Mitchell was denied his hat-trick. Matt Sykes dinked the ball through to Mitchell who chested it forward but as he tried to lob it over the keeper, the number one patted it away from goal.

Connor Brunt had instant impact from the bench as he added his name to the scoresheet. Liam Royles slotted Poole down the right who subsequently whipped the ball through for Brunt to slot home.

The Tigers had late chances through Sykes and Poole who both fired wide of both top corners.

The final whistle sounded to confirm that the Tigers were back to winning ways.

Worksop next face a tough away trip against Knaresborough Town on Saturday, 6th October.
