Game 27 // 27/09/18 - Worksop Town U19s 4-1 Retford United U19s

Worksop Town U19s 4-1 Retford United U19s

Tigers Triumph in Bassetlaw Derby

Town took the lead after twenty minutes thanks to Charlesworth however they were pegged back minutes later by a Bennet volley from a set-piece. Liam Smart and Sam Jones netted two in the space of a minute to put the Tigers ahead at the break. A smart finished from Evison wrapped up the Derby win.
It was an even opening ten minutes on a cool breezy night in S80. Alfie Doddsworth’s quick feet allowed the forward to take aim and fire towards goal which was quickly halted as Widdowson threw himself in front of the shot as he blocked the stinging effort.

Moments later, Doddsworth switched play to Liam Smart who headed across goal to Mushet who hesitated before the keeper claimed it.

A quarter into the game, Tigers had their best chance. Deegan Atherton nodded just inches over the bar from an Evison cross at the back stick.

The Tigers took the lead on the twentieth minute mark. Jack Charlesworth received the ball with his back to goal and hit it on the swivel. The ball went in off the post via a deflection off the leg of Bennet.

Minutes later, United were back on level terms. A free-kick, wide left, was  sent into the box deep towards the back area of the six yard box where Liam Bennet powered his volley past Gamble.

Ten minutes later, Ex-Badgers goalkeeper James Gamble tipped a fierce George White volley wide to keep it level. The Tigers countered and the ball eventually found its way to Mushet who knocked it past Bennet before rifling his shot wide of the upright.

Town added two goals in the space of a minute. Firstly, Liam Smart was threaded through on goal by Darien and the left-back finished off the move perfectly by slotting the ball under Reah.

Almost straight from kick-off, the home side finished off an incredible one touch passing move with Charlesworth squaring it across to Sam Jones who tucked it home.

The Tigers started the second half emphatically. Charlesworth spotted the run of Darien who took the ball down magnificently before dragging his shot wide of the near post.

Ten minutes after the restart Matthew Cassidy saw his thunderous volley, from twenty-five yards, fly just over Gamble’s goal.

On the hour mark, Jay Evison added a fourth goal for the Tigers. Evison was in acres of space on the edge of the box so he took aim and saw his effort bounce beyond the grasp of the keeper who really should have parried the shot.

With a quarter to go, the Badgers squandered a glorious chance to pull a goal back. James Gamble had a lapse in concentration as he passed the ball to the feet of Oliver Ashwell who managed to pull his shot wide of the front post.

Aaron Mushet had the chance to add a fifth with ten minutes remaining. Mushet turned and outpaced his marker but he could only hammer his attempt into the side-netting.

On the stroke of full-time. Aaron Mushet poked wide of the target from McClaren’s drive down the left.

The full-time whistle went to confirm Worksop’s triumph in the Bassetlaw Derby.

The Tigers next face Hallam F.C. on Thursday, 4th October at Sandygate which is the oldest football ground.
